tonbridge to gloucester which way?

am going to a wedding on friday that starts at 1.30 in painswick nr gloucester - which way do u reckon is best - m40 and then a40 or m4 and then a419 up past swindon??

any idea on times looks a long way!

I always go M4 and then A419. Over the A40 is a right pain especially in summer.

From Reading to Glocester takes me an hour normally, from Tonbridge to reading...not too sure, maybe an 1-1.5 hrs. So total your'e looking 2-2.5 hrs.

Don't know what the traffic's like anticockwise on the M25 via Dartford to the M40, so can't advise on that bit.

The route I'd take (simply because I know it) would be M25 clockwise to J11. Cut down the A319 across the M3 (at J3), through Bracknell and hit the M4 at J10 (thus cutting the corner and missing out the M25 roadworks). Head on West and sneak off up the A419 at J15 to Cirencester and then navigate to Painswick via the A417 or A419 as the fancy takes you (419 looks easiest at 1st glance).

Its, what, 3 hours if the traffic is reasonable?

If youv'e never driven the A419 just after Swindon there is the IMO one of the most spectacular straights in the UK, dead straight for about 4 miles, starting with a steep drop down from an escarpment. It's a shame that you'll be heading through at a busy time of day cause lateish on a summers evening when it's quiet it's the business.

I would go M25 - M3 - A329 - M4, personally, but anything that cuts off the M3 to M4 stretch of the M25 is worth doing at the moment because of the roadworks.

Yep - I used to do that route, but you can get caught in the roadworks tailback before getting to the M3, so now I prefer the A319. In clear conditions its not much slower than the M3 route anyway and when its busy its far quicker.
