Anime (and manga) can be such a hit & miss affair. Does anyone have any recommendations?

So far my collection includes:
* Akira (film and the complete manga)
* Ghost In The Shell (likewise)
* Battle Angel Alita (likewise)
* Ghost In The Shell: Standalone Complex (slowly building up the collection)
* Perfect Blue
* Blood The Last Vampire
* Gundam Wing (complete DVD box set) + Endless Waltz
* Patlabor 1 & 2
* Kai Doh Maru (haven't got round to watching this yet)
* Laputa (aka Castle In The Sky)
* Appleseed
* Love Hina Again (didn't really rate it)
* Animatrix

So, given the above, can anyone recommend anything else I'd like?

Gasaraki looks quite interesting. Does anyone have any experience of it?

Is Princess Mononoke considered anime? In any case, it's worth renting.

I didn't like that very much - overly long and fairly boring IMHO.

I bought it 'cos the box looked cool!

Yeah, me too.

I watched it when not entirely sober and had to switch it off about half way through as my eyes were starting to hurt and my head was starting to spin. I think I may have to give it another go another time.

Current stuff I'm really liking:

RahXephon
Getter Robo
Generator Gawl
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Gundam Seed
Street Fighter 2 V
Gasaraki
Elfen Lied
Devil Lady
Gilgamesh
Boogiepop Phantom
Vampire Princess Miyu
Witch Hunter Robin
3x3 Eye's
Hellsing
Naruto
Flame of Recca

Think those should keep you going

Not sure if you can play R1 DVD's but most of those are still only available in the US.

If you can then I recommend the following sites for all you Anime needs...

If we're talking old school, then i'd have to go with 'ULTIMATE TEACHER' - directed by the same chap that did 'Fist of the North Star'.
It features a heroine whose secret weapon is her 'Velvet Pussy Panties'. Fantastic.

Crying Freeman is another classic:

...be careful, there's been a dreadful live action US remake (as there has been for Fist Of the Northstar)

See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manga

Much of it is definitely not for kids. For example, it is widely accepted that without "Akira" and "Ghost In The Shell", there would not have been The Matrix since it is heavily influenced by both (or totally rips them off, depending on who you talk to )
