I think Purple and No. 4 are the best.
I hated Shangri-La with a vengeance.
Thank You is good for a cross-section of the old-school grunge tunes with Weiland doing his more ear-friendly Cobain (a-la Interstate Love Song) instead of his screeching.
And as an aside, I thought generally speaking Velvet Revolver was a bit dissapointing.

Their first two albums were the best... after that it all went a bit rubbish.
Don't get me wrong I am a huge fan and I LOVE all of it. It's just that No 4 sounds polished and is well produced compared to the earlier work which now sounds quite dated.

Ah, it's because it sounds polished and produced I'm not such a fan...
It's a bit like the first two Oasis albums... raw... the later ones are just recycled rubbish IMHO.
Then again, look at the likes of Nevermind. Strangely hailed as the peak of the "grunge" era... cobblers, it's toss. Overproduced, contrived... MTV'd to death and it killed the genre. Pearl Jam went the same way as well... first two albums were great, then rapidly downhill.
Soundgarden seemed to survive it quite well... and I must admit Audioslave has rekindled some of that sound - worth a listen if you get a chance. Not got round to Velvet Revolver yet though...

Nope... managed to miss that.
I did however part with cash for Chris Cornell's solo effort (former Soundgarden frontman and now Audioslave).. not too bad... but you need to be in a wrist slitting mood to get anything out of it...

Cornell's work on the 'Singles' soundtrack is pretty good - plus you get some Motherlovebone, which is nice. Nice as in effing awesome.

Option number two for me, but I do have the first Audioslave album. Second one was far too over-indulgent in the lead guitar department.
Been meaning to part with money for the second album... nowt else I want to listen too at the moment (sigh)

Yep... got the Mother Love Bone EP / eponymous album... Chloe Dancer / Crown of thorns is a classic track for the era. The rest is quite good (and amusing) if a little wierd (e.g. Holy Roller).
Got the singles soundtrack.. like that too - espe the Peral Jam stuff. Never "got" Alice in Chains though... That Soundgarden riff is STUNNING though (track name escapes me).
Oh, and Temple of the Dog is an interesting little collection of stuff too...
