anyone rented an interesting car in new york?

I am off to new york in september for 5 days, wondering particularly if there is anything you peeps can recommend that's worth doing?
...and also whether it is possible to hire a beefy muscle car and belt around the city for an afternoon :D now that is something I really like the sound of! but can I do it? i'm 23 by the way - does this fact preclude me?
got the usual touristy things planned like 'copter ride around the sky scrapers/statue of liberty, evening on board bateaux new york etc but anything worth seeing off the (tourist) beaten track? bars? clubs?

Let's wait for more informed persons to chime in, but I believe cars and New York City don't go well together, especially muscle cars. New York State maybe...not the city.
Whenever I go to NY city, the cars there tend to be a little 'undesirable'. You would not want to take your car there. Not for the fact that it may be nicked, but plainly for the fact that fender benders are so commonplace. The residents just don't seem to car about bumps, and dents on their car. Up here in upstate NY its much better. less pratts on the road, and less traffic. less idiots, and nicer scenery!
Not rented one myself, but the owner of Gotham Dream Cars is a really nice guy with some great cars. Probably fulfils your description of "interesting"
Or alternatively, grow some chunky sideburns and a 'tache, get yourself a brown suit, pop on a pair of gradiated-lens Aviators, stick a .44 Magnum in your jacket pocket and hire yourself the oldest Chevrolet Caprice, Dodge Monaco or Ford Crown Victoria you can get your hands on, then take all the corners as hard as possible, producing freakish roll angles, squealing tyres and losing hubcaps. Extra 'Clint points' can be accrued by knocking over cardboard boxes, driving down alleyways with steam coming out of the drains, and being rude to hotdog/donut salesmen.
Well it'd be a lot of fun and more likely than a 23-year-old walking into a hire car place and saying 'can I have a Mustang'

Complete waste of time, there are so many pot holes you will more than likely damage the wheels of anything interesting. Just look at the state of the taxis!
When I lived in manhattan I used to get the train out of the city to pick up hire cars.
Usually hire cars are cheaper as well out of the city as average garage rents to keep a car are $500 a month.
Most intresting car I hired was a vette.

I was in NYC three weeks ago, and I would definitely not recommend hiring anything at all.
The driving is diabolical and you will almost certainly put a dent in it.
Use the Yellow Cabs instead, and marvel at the driver's ability to fit a large car through a very small gap at suprisingly high speed.

I regularly go to Manhattan for work and just got back from another 4 weeks stint (literally just finished filling in my £7.5k expense claim, the boss will be please to'row He he he!), I can truthfully say car hire will be unnecessary. There's the subway if close by, or just take the easy option,..cab!
You seem to have the usual touristy trip/places booked, but I would also recommend a trip on the USS Intrepid carrier too (allocate 0.5 day). Bloody huge mother of a ship and you can walk/climb around inside, visit the control tower, check out the various planes etc.. Good fun I thought (maybe just me, or I watched TopGun too many times

Worth going on 2 hour trip along the East river in the Zephyr catamaran (by Sth Seaport). Especially nice sunny weather this time of year, just sit at the top deck chilling out, and listening to the tour guide giving you a lowdown of the various building/history of Manhattan. When I went (back in March, my gf and I was the only tourists on the cataraman, so we had undivided attention from the tour guide and crews!
If your going soon, you MUST visit Central Park. Weekends will be busy and you got to check out the Rollerskate park area!
There's loads to mention but I need to hit the sack now! You'll have a great time there.

Forget to mention, if you do catch the catamaran, don't bother booking a trip to S of Liberty because you'll coast right alongside it on this trip. Two birds with one stone! Given recent the terrorist threats, there's very stringent security checks on the S of Liberty trips, so allow for plenty of time for the trip if you do go. To save more pennies, get on the Staten ferry, but that's a longer journey which you may get bored.
