The parents of a good friend of mine took that 60s opportunity and moved to Australia.
They were successful (five bedroom house etc.), and, cutting their story short, now want to retire back to the UK -as the father is an avid West Ham fan.
There is a problem though in that their beautiful 5 bedroom house would only realise around £40k! There is no way they can buy anything in the home counties for that and so they're stuck.
Long term, emmigration can be one way only sometimes..

I wonder how long it will take to train as a hairdresser? I leave for Oz next April on a WHV but dont want to come back to the UK.
Any tips for getting the sponsorship? Dont particulaly want to marry an Ozzie if I can help it. ***

Working Holiday Visa, wont be much of a holiday as I will be working and impressing people enough to make them sponsor me to stay in Oz.
I did have a proposal the other week from a NZ guy to marry him. That was only after he saw me in Miss Daisy...!
Perhaps I should take her with me

My aunt and uncle (and cousins) went to Oz on the 'ten-pound ticket' in 1970. They came back for a visit two years ago; my uncle never took his coat off, he claimed he was too cold (British summertime, of course).
My parents intended to go ; I recall going to some presentations in Middlesbrough as a kid of about 8/9, but they missed the boat (as it were) and kept making excuses not to go (my schooling, grandparents ill etc etc).
Uncle ended up owning a screen-door manufacturing company (you know, those mossie-proof things that houses have in warm climes); sold up, bought an articulated caravette and spent 5 years touring Oz as they'd never seen much of it for working!
They're retired now, my cousins have done quite well too... but I've never felt the urge to go.

Tear up your passport on the way and claim asylum. It works here anyway.
If you try that in Australia they will throw you in a gulag like prison in the middle of the desert for a few months and then send you back home.
Well my family and I are off to view properties in The Bahamas in October. My rationale and plans are as follows:
1) Tax. I pay absured Tax levels in the Uk! I've calculated that I could pay for friends and family to visit us and we'd still be far better off!
2) The weather. In the UK, I reckon, over the course of a year about one day in four is 't-shirt' weather.
3) Get away from miserable, complaining gits like me!
4) Escape the ever interfering Labour government who want to control every aspect of my family's life, but expect me to finance every work-shy thug and their sponging relatives.
5) Practically I intend to keep my UK family residence in case I (or my kids) choose to return. In the meantime, I'll rent it out.
6) On the downside, I'll have to flog the TVR, although I may ask a friend to look after it for when I come to The UK on my summer holidays!
All in all, the pros outweigh the cons in my view.
