The Unholy Stink of US Legal Wrath...

I love America, the USA, that is: sure, it has it's societal flaws - which countrty doesn't - but overall and despite contemporary 'neo-con' tendancies in DC which suggest Armegeddon might be a neat idea, the common reality of the basic model of things is pretty darned good.
Loads of space, generally cracking standard of living, lowish taxation and a healthy aversion to centre-left zeitgeists both economically and politically.
It should be the land where the steroidal ferret roams free with olympian zeal.
Except for one thing: a legal system which is the scourge of the western world.
A profession designed exclusively for the hateful, transatlantic bourgoisie, a strain of pointless collegiates, empowered by their own set of impenetrable codes and practices, inflexible, implacable convictions backed by the seemingly random whim of ad hocular, judicial precedent, themselves a breed apart from anything partially rooted in reality.
A system, then, which manages to throw up decisions like the current stink over the Vioxx drug.
Now, don't get me wrong, there is - indeed has to be a place for compensation via legal redress - but when awards of the magnitude renedered in this case are pronounced (even though they will be scaled down from $250M to a scarcely less fathomable, estimated $30M), it opens the floodgates for what potentially threatens the very impetus for at least medical research going forward, per se, if not having implications for general issues of corporate development generally.
I mean, you really can't break wind in America without some pompous leech breaking cover and citing damnation on just about anybody and everything in sight, however tenuously implicated for 'the blame.'
The upshot is, that if accidents and mistakes are simply outlawed, how can society prevail?
The bereaved spouse in this case may well have a case: but to award $30M is an absolute scandal.
If this really is to be the fatted edge of the democratic wedge, I suspect the outlook for enlightened totalitarianism may offer a way out.
Utterly unnacceptable stuff and a dire warning for this nation.
Not only do we suffer the meddlesome, soft communism of the europarl but we embrace the arse brained tossology of colonial upstart, legal ideology.

In Europe left wing parties are funded by unions who correspondingly get their pay off when the parties they support are in power.
In America the Democrats are bankrolled in part by the Trial Lawyers who have laws in place to support their supporters.

Many are straight, hard working honest folks with a sense of public duty and justice, but some are just scum, simply chasing issues for their own ego and/or bank account irrespective of the social consequencies. Unfortunately it seems that it is the one profession where being a tw*t actually brings success.

Got invoved with the legal trade for the first time ten years ago.
Before that, I used to respect the profession. Dealings with them revealed they don't deserve the dignity of the term profession.
I've had....
A judge/solicitor who lied in an affidavit...
A solicitor who applied for legal aid, knowing it wouldn't be granted...then charged for the work...
Solicitors who couldn't care bloody less...
Solicitors whose only motivation was to spin things out to maximise fees...
Solicitors who bring the wrath of the Court down on those who don't respond immediately....
Solicitors who are downright bloody rude....
Solicitors who are lousy judges of character...
Solicitors who are more interested in covering their own backs than the welfare of their clients....
The sight of a barrister and his pupil urinating in the street.....
A barrister having sex in a public toilet during an official function....
I could go on.....
This bunch of useless winkers far outnumber the good ones I've come across.
The legal bods on here are, I am in no doubt, m'lud, not tarred with same brush as the aforementioned miscreants.....
