How come this isnt big news? usually when kids go missing it is the #1 story on every news network and gets the lead story and fifteen minute coverage. I only saw this today the coverage has been so poor, he went missing on Friday and now they have found a body, and it barely rates a mention?

So why are some missing/dead/murdered kids more newsworthy than others?

Ah, this is something that does raise a few hackles.

You see, young boys are not so cutsie in the eyes of the public, but young girls seem to be, as they can be pictured in a sweet dress etc.. with a doll..

I know it is cynical, but it does seem that way to me.

It is sadly true that cute gets news. I know of a horrific murder of a young girl that only made four or five lines in the paper because she was a loner and would not have made such good copy.

It's quite a highly placed story where I've seen it. If it wasn't for the whole Brazilian/police mess then it'd be at the top.

This is true. As pointed out, missing girls, especially middle-class pretty ones are much more newsworthy than missing boys. A sad state of affairs.

There was a case a few years ago where a teenage girl went missing and was eventually found murdered which hardly made the news at all because she came from a broken home and had previously had drug problems and run away before.

I havent seen the papers today but i followed the story yesterday, bloody sad too and even more so that i have an 11 year old that is full of the joys,if there is foul play involved i couldnt think of a better excuse for bringing hanging back as long as though involved can be proved without a doubt.

Its a shame, this Brazilian/Police mess has been the news headlines for almost a week! I dont recall the 52 victims of the bombings getting as much headlines. I sometimes wonder if the BBC news heads have a hidden agenda!
I hate myself for thinking this, but its indicitave of the ghastly sensationalist news today; I wonder if had the child had been a colour other than white, the BBC would have tried to get a racist slant on the killing, making top of the news!

I think there's more to this story than we are imagining.

When I say more, I mean it might not be what we are thinking (ie- a straight forward murder).

I think the coppers know more than they are letting on and that the conclusion could be unusual.

There looks to be some finger pointing coming in the future and heads could Roll, its a shame to think that politics can get more coverage than the victims themselves,i get the impression the media have concluded the great British public revel more in speculative gossip that a nasty act that has already happenend.

We live only 15-20 miles away from where this occured and didn't know about it untill last night. Apparently they did put the chopper up with IR to search nearby woods but it has been a strangely quiet one.
In the past when children have gone missing around here you couldn't move five metres without seeing posters and info sheets.

Why is it that all news stories seem to be "blamed" on the BBC. From what I could see, the Brazilian story is being covered by ALL the British news outlets, not just the Beeb.

From what I've heard this morning, this poor young chap had a bit of a troubled history so the police are reluctant to start issuing warnings about abductions etc at the moment. They are waiting for the coroner's report.

Maybe the Police have asked for low or no news coverage as they have a suspect in mind and don't want to tip them off.......... Just a thought.

Well terrorists will kill people willy nilly - it's their job.

Wheras our forces of law 'n order are not employed to hold an innocent person down and pump 8 shots into them.

Both big stories - but the police one was last and nothing has come along to take it's place as top story. And we can do something about the plod - them terrorists are going to be very boring to catch.

And it's still silly season too.

Name one missing / abduction case that has recently had high profile media attention that didn't involve a white teenage girl.

Normally I wouldn't rise to this kind of trolling but felt I had to say something. Thats my piece and I'll say no more.

Seems like a terrible situation, the poor family etc. Shame

they were pretty certain the killers were black from the start.

The story did seem to get a lot of coverage, but it wasnt because it was perceived as racist.

It was just a shocking murder.

The idea that crimes against black people get more coverage is wrong.

one of my patients who is black was recently shot in the face by a gang (some of whom were white and black )who did this to him after marching him around several cash points and getting him to withdraw money.

The bullet passed through his cheek and amazingly missed any vital blood vessels on its way out through the back of his neck. Obviousy this was attempted murder.

It didnt more than a one inch column in the local rag.

I see my post with a question to IS200RJR was removed. I won't repeat the question because it was clearly construed as being offensive but it was not intended in that way. It was a genuine query though possibly a bit blunt.

Apologies if any offence caused.
