Before I sound off too much, is it a 'Post Mortem' in this country or an 'Autopsy' or is there a difference. I thought we called it a PM, but in the states it's an autopsy.

I thought it would be valid both ways in both places? It is not an english term anyway ( ? )

PM.... unfortunate loss of a loved one with an undeterminable cause of death forced the coroner to use a PM to determine the actual cause of death.... not a nice situation to be in.

I thought it was PM in this country so why on earth do tv programmes call it autopsy.

Post mortem is a clinical dissection to discover the cause of death, autopsy is when you spend all your time crying the hours into years...

Probably in case the network tries to sell it to the Yanks, in which case they'll understand it...

Unless I die of "special circumstances" I really don't want a PM. Don't think there's any way round it though.

Depends on the circs.

My ex-wifes bro had a heart/ lung transplant; he lived for a few days afterwards (kind of ironic since he was 21, his parents were told at his birth he'd be lucky to see 1) and died of (IIRC) pneumonia.
The family declined a PM as they felt the poor bugger had suffered enough, and it was fairly obvious to the medics what the problems were...

It's funny you should say that, but there seems to be a reluctance for using anatomical parts other than internal organs.
For example, me Julie has a slight deformity of one hand, but she would rather live with it, or even have it amputated, than to have a replacement hand fitted from a corpse.
I recall once when I worked for an undertakers, popping along to collect a deceased old lady. I was a little taken aback to realise that her eyes had gone; taken for cornea donation I believe... just a couple of bits of mushy string dangling from under the lids.

I've made it clear in my will that I wish my body to be donated to medical research, who knows what I'll be used for.

i thought it depends on age. if you die when under the age of 60-65 (??) then they chop you up and find out what went wrong. if you are older then they just put you down as "peggin it".
