www.satellites.co.uk/php-bin/forum/index.php is a good place to start - you'll get plenty of help.

I went with a 1m motorised system back in January this year. You want to get a receiver that allows you to update the firmware (I use a Fortecstar 5100 ultra), this will then allow you to decode some encrypted channels, for football, motor sport , films, general entertainment, adult entertainment etc, without having to use cards to decrypt channels.

Motorised is best if you want to go feed hunting so that you can look at as many satellites as possible. I keep an eye on this site to what feeds are around at the moment - www.satelliweb.com/?langue=en

http://knplogic.com/sport/index.html is good for what satellites/channels are showing different sports.

I just need to book a few courses at night school to learn German, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Albanian, Arabic and Italian so that I can understand what I'm watching.
