I'm having a slight career based dilema, for which I thought I'd throw open to the masses for some advice.

I currently work in IT, for a company I like, but doing a job I dislike and working hours that are totally anti-social. I earn a basic salary of x and gain extra overtime leaving a pretty good salary of y, but shocking hours.

My dilema is as follows - I have been offered a new job that pays more basic than salary x, but less than salary y and is a change of role. My current company are likey to offer me salary y, but without the shocking shifts, and with a slight change in role. So do I stay or do I go for a fresh change, bearing in mind that if I stay the resentment from my co-workers will be high, I won't be having a fresh start and my progression will not be as great as the new job. The salary difference is approx £5000.

Agree..Just do what you are happiest. At the end of the day, if you hate your job, it will trickle down into your normal life, and depress you. Go for less money, but more enjoyable!

That's part of the problem ......... I don't know. Both scenarios have perks, one is a fresh start, less money, but more prospects. The other is good money, familiar surroundings but probably no further progression.

If you're happy where you are surely the change in position at the same place is the best bet ... you can always look for another step up the ladder when you get fed up there.

"The half life of a pay rise is six weeks"

i.e. Six weeks after the increase in money it will have become irrelevant to your job satisfaction.

Decide what you like doing best. Do it. Only way to go about it.

I think a regular move is good for your career and gives you a broader perspective, but you should stay in each job for at least a couple of years unless you have a definite reason to leave. If you've been with your current co for less than two years and aren't sure you want to go, then stay. If you've been there for more than five years and aren't sure you want to stay, then go.
