"that must mean you learned english in that short space of time" - Some annoying eejit, circa afternoon-tea.
Good fellows with heads of pistons, is the correct word here "learnt", or "learned"? I am convinced it is the former, but had the latter inserted down my throat with great force earlier. Please settle this uncomfortably warm discussion for me.
Thankyou.

"These are alternative forms of the past tense and past participle of the verb learn. Learnt is more common in British English, and learned in American English. There are a number of verbs of this type (burn, dream, kneel, lean, leap, spell, spill, spoil etc.). They are all irregular verbs, and this is a part of their irregularity."
So, to be British about it, use "learnt".

Yet another reason to inflict pain on people! It so annoys when people interchange learned with learnt...
The correct phrase is learnt - poke anybody who says otherwise...
