I have a 13yo Springer/Collie and a 2yo Jack Russell, both bitches. The old girl is the ultimate boss when push comes to shove, but the ankle biter does try to take a few chunks out of her in the process. Jack Russell ownership is an experience.

I would go for an older rescue dog if anything, it will help calm the younger one down.

I thought you said nothing too big!

I love Cocker Spaniels, too.

I`ve always had a dog, the bigger the better.
We had Rotweillers when the kids were young, fantastic dogs.
When the last one died we decided to not replace him, then 2 years later someone broke in to the house, luckily they set the alarm off but i thought sod this, so i got a Neopolitan Mastiff.
If you have one dog you can get them to behave themselves but 2 dogs will behave like dogs plus you might need a bigger car.
Anybody that gets a dog should get one that fits in with there lifestyle.
People tend to get a dog that they think looks OK,then they don`t give it enough time.
One dog is good. Two dogs is not usually better

Depends on the dog.

We had an older dog and a younger one (18mnths old) came along out of the blue. The young fella pissed off the old geezer so much he got half his ear bitten off for his trouble!!!

And fuk me do dogs ears bleed!!! Especially when they think thier hair's wet and do a 5000rpm head shake. Fine droplets of blood EVERYWHERE.

Unless your knowledgeable about and dead set on a breed then your best bet is the rescue centre, loads to choose from and they love you more, apparently. Just take yours along and see who you get on with the most.

BTW We've got a Jack Russel/Staffy cross and a Bedlington Terrier, both found wondering the streets, cracking dogs.

Let the dog choose you, not the other way round.

When we went to look at a litter some years ago, there were about eight pups all clamouring for attention. And one that couldn't care less. For about two minutes, then got up, came over, pushed all the others out of the way, and came home with us. Kim was a great dog, died ten years ago, aged 13. Still miss her.

If you're considering a Spaniel, consider an Irish Water Spaniel.

Not suitable really for everybody's circumstances, but just about the best dog in world to own if you can manage it.

I've got one. Best decision I've made in years, getting Pat.

Casper would kill it.

As if, not at 7 months he wouldn't. Still a puppy and you know that Thing is a jack is an active sort of a critter but not as smart as a collie so I figure they would amuse each other without needing total input from you. You don't want something to brainy but activity would help so that suggests terrier to me and not something fat.

Jacks and Staffies might be a bit of a no-no as playmates. Both have reputations for being fight starters. My girl will pick fights with any dog who's bigger than her. She goes along the lines of 'they are bigger than me but I can have them if I get the first bite in'. Small dog syndrome.

If you do go along the Jack Russell route, get insurance for the dogs, you, the house..... You get my drift.

Butter wouldn't melt would it...

We used to have a boxer (bitch) and staffie (dog) and they got on famously together. The boxer was crazy enough to keep the staffie occupied and the staffie strong enough to be boss There was about a 7 month difference between them

Only thing was we had to get him done (kept running away on shagging trips before we got the boxer) and whenever the boxer came on heat poor little blighter was trying his hardest to master the 'high jump'

Unfortunately the staffie died - best dog I ever had and probably ever will, I am absolute fan of the breed and despite what you think, your staffie wont attack your new dog (if you introduce them properly and keep discipline) and will actually protect it to the end should he need to. My staff would never attack anything (unless attacked first) but if the boxer ever got in a scrap he was straight in to help. It was a real doggie love affair!

I've meant planty of staffs when out with my dog and can only recall one incident when a bitch attacked my dog when we were walking away. In conclusion I agree that the reputation they have is completely undeserved. They are playfull dogs and usually like other dogs.

Came across an evil mutt today....

About a foot high and a foot long. Short hair, as fast as a spider and a barksnarl like a banshee...

Evil eyes and teeth, my god, what teeth. It thought it was a bloody Pitbull.....I could just picture it going through your ankle like a chainsaw.....

I'm pretty sure it was the devil up for a breath of air.....
