Saw this on the BBC website looks bad considering what has recently happended in New Orleans

So what is the difference between a Tempest,Hurricane,cyclone,typhoon ?

I think a typhoon is the Pacific's version of a hurricane.

Not got a clue never passed A - Level Geography as I misread the map that said the exam was to be in the hall and ended up in Hull.

Tempest, Hurricane, Typhoon have all been used as names for military hardware.....but Cyclone has only been used to brand vaccum cleaners.

Tempest, Hurricane, Typhoon have all been used as names for military hardware.....but Cyclone has only been used to brand vaccum cleaners.


Ime sure Cyclone has been used as an aircraft not sure about in the RAF though,but what is the difference talking storms.

Hurricane = Atlantic north of equator
Typhoon = Pacific north of equator
Cyclone = Atlantic or Pacific south of equator

edited to add that a tempest is just a really big fricking storm.

None all the same thing, just different names in different parts of the world.

I'm not sure there's an actual aircraft called a cyclone (though there probably is) however the Wright Cyclone was a very important radial aero engine in WW2.
