Last weekend a person I know saw some women pushing a trolley or cart type of thing with hanging baskets on, he recognised some of the flowers as belonging to the lady nearby, he checked with her to make sure she had not sold them and she did not know they had gone. He then challeneged the women concerned who he belived to be of Polish decent or that vicinity, one of the women start crying saying we so sorry (I presume sorry that they had been caught stealing). He had strong words with them, a person who saw this called the police, by the time they arrived (I am surprised it was the same day) the gentleman concerned was back in his house. The police called on him told him he could not speak to people in the manner he had and threatned to give him a caution. WHAT THE BLOODY HELL IS GOING ON IN THIS COUNTRY does this mean you should go out and pat thieves on the back and God knows what you would be charged with if you made a citizens arrest.

The Police seem more concerned with protecting criminals now and persecuting the law abiding majority.

I'd love to hear your reasoning behind that one, JL!

Whilst its an exaggerated view, I think its obvious to most that this is the way things are heading.

Simple

The police/criminal justice system have a monopoly on law enforcement and despite their mainifest uselessness in carrying out zealously protect it.

Hence they come down hard on anyone who dares to defend themselves/other people or their property.

Wasnt there a story a while ago about some kids vandalising some garages. An old lady uses her video camera to catch them in the act and the police advised her that that it could be an offence and she could be prosecuded.

No action was taken againt the kids

Chances are (having been involved in something similar in the past) that its a bit of poetic license here. Chances are that the Police popped round to talk about what this chap said and that he shouldnt really take things into his own hands.

Its an unfortunate world where Police have to warn the public to not get involved in such cases, but when a sharp solicitor can take things like this and turn them against you, its really better to not get involved. Its not a case that the police take a dim view (I would have thought that most would welcome the "assistance", its just that we, the public, are not aware of what we can / cant say and what we can / cant do. The Police are and are semi-protected by the training and badge they carry.

Its easy to take a "friendly word" and spin it a little into something much more. Chances are that a clash of personalities got involved too...... two sides and all of that....

Oh, and just to add - its shocking and distrubing that this is having to happen. Its a shame that things have degenerated so far.

That's just abdication of responsibility.

If the police won't do anything about it, then members of the public must. Otherwise all you have is anarchy.

No, by that time you already have anarchy; the police must do something about it.

didnt hear about that, but almost identical case where i used to work at halfords, the street its on had cctv. some chav robbed this old lady, and it was caught on the cctv system. he was caught and taken to court and prosecuted, and said that because there were no signs up stating that cctv was being used, he was being entrapped and turned the whole case on its head so that in the end, HE was suing the police for entrapment!!! how daft is that?

now the cameras have gone and the shops use radios to commincate dodgy people, gives me something to listen to during my lunch hour

The Police do not have a monoploy on law enforecment.

Any member of the public has the right to arrest someone caught in the act of committing a crime (there are some exceptions).
A "Citizen's Arrest" has the same power in law as a BiB's arrest.

That makes no sense - why didn't they just put up a CCTV sign?

Could you take a picture and show us. I would love to see a picture of a copper dealing with a crime. Go back to your rose tinted specs.
