I noticed with interest that mouthwash contains Alcohol.
How much and if I gargle with the stuff and take my car out will the alcohol once the minty smell diminishes be noticeable on my breath.
Re: Would nice Traffic policeman request a breathtest on the basis he can smell alcohol?
Never done this
just curious if anyone had this exp or any info on this matter.

If you tell the officer you've just had a drink, then IIRC you can't be breathalized for 20 mins

If you don't swallow it your breath probably won't smell of alochol. The smell of alcohol on your breath comes when drinking because ethanol in your blood diffuses out into your lungs and is then exhaled.

If you rinse your mouth out with mouth wash and then do a breath test you'll fail. Thats one of the reasons the bib leave it 20 mins to allow any alcohol in your breath to be diluted away.....

It is not a legal requirement that BiB should wait 20 minutes. The most common breath test device is the SL400. Very good bit of kit. It is simply good user practice to wait 20 minutes since the last drink was consumed, in order to prevent any alcohol on the breath affecting the result.

In reality, to affect the result you would quite literally have to be gargling with whisky 2 minutes before the test to have any real impact. It is all rather irrelevant anyway, the result of the roadside test is not evidential. It is the machine back at the station that counts.

The growing trend now in hospital and indeed in general practice is to use alcohol based gels and rubs to steralise the hands. Me been the curious one worked out that I probably apply 5-10ml of at least 60% alcohol anything upto 20 times a day. I know the skin is good at absorbing certain drugs and I wonder how much of this stuff gets into the blood stream? No one seems to be able to give me an answer.

I don't know for sure but I thought it evaporated quicker than it could be absorbed.

I think you're right Lois. I wash a lot of things with acetone and ethanol and get it my hands pretty often. It just evaporates straight away. I've never felt drunk in the lab... though somtimes things get a bit heady with some of the chemicals.

You will probably absorb some but you're right, 99% will evaporate long before it gets absorbed. We use similar ethanol gels and sprays for cell culture work and other than the smell making you gag if you have a hangover I've never noticed any other effect...... Now if you were to spread 5-10 ml of etOH gel on some toast 20 times a day you might have a problem (obesity and alcohol dependency)
