My driving instructor taught me that one should always press the knob when engaging the handbrake. I cringe when I hear people engage without knob-pressing first. Are you lot knob-pressers?

You should definitely press the knob if you drive a Porsche 997. Owners will know why.

I press my knob on the rare occasion that I actually use the handbrake.

Yep, I am a confirmed knob-presser, I was taught to do it and it just sounds kinder than not I suppose.

I dont and i suspect its a bit of a myth that its neccesary.
The reason I say this is that having had 2 cars with foot pedal handbrakes (footbrakes I suppose) they seem to act in the same way as pulling a handbrake without pressing the knob thus it cant be that harmful.

Whether it is or not, its not a nice sound. it reminds me of dragging a large wrench across a corregated iron roof

I give my handle a good yank, and don't press the knob.

In the Merc i press my foot down hard and don't have a knob

I'm a bit of a halfway person myself.

I'll push the button, lifting gently, let go of the button, and give it one click to grip.

its just like a rachet i suppose so i dont see how it can do any harm, when pressing the knob your just releasing the thing that holds it in position.

yes i do by the way

Knob pusher on the Fab, or any car with a 'normal' handbrake. BG has a floor pedal on the left, disengages as soon as you pop the column selector out of park.

You can't do a handbrake turn with your knob out....

When learning to drive, I was taught to press my knob when engaging the handbrake. Being a bit of a smart-arse, I commented on the lack of knob pressing when my father was driving, and he simply said: How else do you know that the ratchet is working correctly?

And I still don't have an answer to that. So no, I'm not a knob-presser.

I place my hand firmly around the shaft, and gently help it into an upright position while pressing buttons.

Handbrakes are for wooses! Their only function in a Chimaera is to look pretty (as far as I can tell!)

Some cars you've got to press your knob before anything will happen, e.g. some Aston Martins, Morgans.
