Just had my peace and quiet interrupted by a door-to-door salesman from my local electric company, masquerading as an "Energy Adviser" from the "Electricity Board", who was doing an "Energy Analysis" in the area...

Needless to say his scandalous sales technique will result in a strong complaint to his employer and anyone else who will listen...

Just why is this practise allowed in modern society?

Fundamentally there to prey on those who know no better. I pity those who succumb.

My mother set the feds on one last year since he was not convincing and appeared to want to gain entry.

Since she is a proper old dear the feds set off in hot pursuit and gave them (car load trolling the neighbourhood) a right bollocking

Good on the feds - response time was very low..the pie/doughnut shop must have just closed (sorry for the gross slur BiBs )

Several years ago we had the good fortune of a knock on the door and verbal diarrhoea being blurted. I asked the guy where his identifiaction was, and he pointed to the top right hand corner of his clip board. I asked him what he was doing, and he said showing me his I.D. number. No mate...photo, company name etc., please......Ain't got one of them says he. He shut the gate behind him on the way out.
Quick call to the local nick, description, car reg etc., but it did turn out to be legit'. The police even followed up with a courtesy call a that evening. About 2 weeks later, the Company's area manager turned up at the doorstep and apologised.

Why do they always have to come out with the scripted and duplicitous bullshit?

I reckon they would cover far more ground more quickly and be more successfull if they just said...

"Hi, i'm flogging gas/electricity for xxxxxxxx and you never know, we could look at your bills, do some sums, and we might save you some money by switching, got ten minutes?"

I would happily swop my gas/electric to the one supplier, but cant be arsed to make the effort to actually go and do it, we have had folks knock on the door who's sole objective is to find a prospect like me, but because they just talk bollox at the door, they get told to off!

It's very common. They are really only trying to get your name and address details together with a look at your gas or electricity bill. The best technique, is to just jump in ask them their full name and the name of their employer. Then tell them you need all the details for a complaint to OFGEM. I keep a digi camera handy and tell them I need a photo of them for the complaint letter. By this stage they have usually legged it at great speed.

BTW they get paid according to how many name, address and utility supplier details they collect.
