No they're not. They get sent round almost everytime there's a big Hurricane or storm. The link below names other times and also what they really are.

According to local TV news, those images were sent to Bill by Bill's cousin Bob who lives in Miami. Maybe not!

I was going to say - they look much more like supercell clusters just prior to a tornadic vortex.

Having survived three of the buggers (hurricanes not tornados) last year, I can tell you what it is like: First - fast moving clouds (and I mean fast. Clouds moving like they are on fast motion in a movie). Then the rain. Finally as the bands approach you get the wind. Just prior to peak, the rains move sideways because of the wind. How quickly all of this happens depends on the speed of movement, power and size of the hurricane.

And I can confirm that the "eye" of the storm does give a lull. When Charley passed over our house, we were dead centre. The wind just STOPPED. STOPPED completely. It then started up, but with a bit less intensity (we were getting the SW corner which is a little less powerfull).

There you have it.

Yep, more like the stuff we get up here than the stuff you get down there (I live 15 minutes from some of the locations used in 'Twister')
