My forks have been leaking oil which has ran down the hydraulic hose onto the caliper and disk. I need to get it completely off the dick before I fit new pads. Any idea what will do the job? It's a mountain bike brake.

would wet+drying the disc help? or skimming the disc?
maybe some sort of heavy duty degreaser?

dont know much about bike disc breaks, but thats probably what i'd end up doing

i'll ignore the unfortunate typo

Brake cleaner? It's just a degreaser, after all

iirc you could get rid of brake fluid from brake shoes by pouring petrol onto them and setting them alight and scraping the old burnt shite off afterwards.....surely burning off the fluid should work on a disc?

Wonderful stuff.

Mostly used for getting red wine stains out of cream carpets at Chateau Pat.

Ssssshhhh, people have been stunned by my ability to magic stains away at will for many years - you've just given away my secret!

I even keep a jar under the sink in case of emergencies

Ride down a very larghe Everest sized hill with your brakes on,. By the time you get to the bottom it should have burnt off...

(Personally I'd be inclined to stay away from the 'setting fire to it' approach as you never know what oil + heat is going to do to the surface of the disc.)

Have you tried Explosives?

Yeah.. I second that.. Use explosives, then buy a nice, oil free replacement bike...

For a bike, ordinary spray brake cleaner should work fine. If it were mine, I might try to clean up the pads with it as well.

The safest thing would be to replace the pads, but if they are otherwise in good shape they may clean up fine.

On the other hand I imagine mountain bike brake pads don't cost that much for new ones.

Be sure you found the root cause of the leak - you will need new seals but frequently the leak is due to a scratch or burr on the fork slider.
