Rather then pay huge international calling fees, I thought it might be a good idea to use one of those international calling cards, a local access number and my free minutes.

Phoned vodafone to see if there is any problem with this (i.e would they find a way of charging me still) and the monkey on the other end of the line couldn't really give me an answer either way.

I can't see how they could tell that I was using one unless they had some kind of list of numbers used by these cards.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

I have an AT&T calling card for work. It is great when using a landline but the 0800 free access numbers to get into the calling card do not run in the UK on a mobile. I have to drop the first 0 and it charges me for that part of the call. So the international part goes to my calling card but the rest goes on my mobile bill.

Not sure that helps you. Maybe worth calling a reputable calling card company and asking them?

i used to use one a couple of years ago , but i had to dial a london based landline number to get connected. as i had free evening and weekend calls to landlines it was ok.
just buy a card and have a go.
i only called holland but it was very cheap

It is a game of cat and mouse for the likes of Onetel vs o2/orange. As soon as they setup the free call lines the mobile companies block them..

I find that using my mobile to phone mate's mobiles abroad is sometimes cheaper than phoning a foreign landline from my mobile.

Last month a 10 minute call to a South African mobile only cost me just over £2 on a Saturday evening.
Texts cost normal local rate.

Unfortunately international calls and texts can not be taking as part of inclusive minutes/texts packages
