The ladies think about youth far more than the men, who just dont really think about their age/looks till later in life, or not at all. I smoke like a chimney, drink like a fish, dehydrate and only drink when Im thirsty... which must be slaughtering my skin.
Theres a good chance that if (at 29) I had taken care of my body, I might still look 23.
Models go out of their way to take care of their bodies and skin, and often look a decade younger than they really are.
Even stallone and arnie, pushing 60(?) are in far better shape than your average fat bloke next door of a similar age. How old was stallone when he shot Rambo 3 - well into his 40's(!) and how good was his body compared to a random bloke of the same age down the pub!

I was thinking about started a thread called "Fitter in your 30's than 20's" - the caption on a magazine I saw in the shops once.

Hey sepak for yourself Rob!!
I try and take car of myself. Ok I may not be a gym fanatic, but I try and watch what I eat, without being too fussy and I exercise regulary. (Well I did before the shifter on my bike broke and then the light stopped working). Anyhow it's not too much of an issue, I'm still getting Id'd on a regular basis whien trying to get into/get served in pubs.

Bob, whats all this about? Are you having a midlife crisis?
I was wondering the same.
From what I've read, smoking will seriously age your body.
in the couple of months since i gave up i have noticed a lot of advantages to my health aswell as my pocket,i still miss the odd one though.timmy30 said:
Smoking apparently is bad for your old chaps hydraulics too, cuts your circulation, whereas excercise has the opposite effect.
Isn't there a theory that we have a set number of heartbeats before we shuffle off this mortal coil (hence why elephants live longer than mice). Therefore surely exercise is bad for you as it uses up your limited supply of heartbeats.

Mid life crisis, probably
Ive been having one since I was 16
Whilst I dont really give a tossed salad about my skin, I'll admit to having a few thoughts along the lines of 'praps I shouldnt be reducing it to burnt stretched leather before Im 30 either'
Come on though chaps, how many of you would like to have a body (praps not so OOT and heavily muscled) as good as stallones was, in 10 or 20 years?
Sod it, forget the toned muscle. How about being 40 one day, and actually not having a beer belly?

Combine the two then, have a fag whilst running.
I was a regular smoker 10 years or so ago. I still have the odd one (or 10) when I go out for a session, which is only once or twice per month average.
But i also run about 15 miles a week and do a fair bit of Muay thai boxing. It does keep you looking younger, there's a visible difference in appearance between me and some of my (mostly) sedentry pals.
28 btw, never been fitter.

Quite right m8.
Takes a ridiculous amount of work to get in that sort of shape and even more to keep it.
Only time I have a six pack is just before weighing in to fight, 2 hours later and it's gone
Had a good 3 month break from fight training and put on 10kg!
I will say one thing for men's health. Despite what women say, I think it's less acceptable to be an overweight man than an overweight woman.
Think about it - when a man's overweight his mates (perhaps mockingly) will call him a fat bastard and tell him to get some exercise. Society sees the fat man automatically as a lazy, sofa-bound, beer-swilling, chain-smoking slob who's crap in bed. The choice to lose weight will be down to the individual, but the pressure's on for blokes.
Fat women, on the other hand, will be surrounded with other women who'll tell them that they're gorgeous. They'll be told that 'people are/are attracted to all shapes and sizes', and there's an acceptance of 'large ladies' ('big and beautiful' etc) who have their fashions (and shops where you can buy them) advertised on the telly. The overall picture is that fat women can't help being fat, whereas fat men are lazy and hopeless and need to lose some weight.
Seriously, do you see clothes for overweight men being advertised on TV? Are fat men described as 'large and handsome'? No.
No wonder the health and life expectancy of men is improving in this country. In some ways its positive, but in other ways it highlights the difference in what's acceptable among men and women.

Interesting and intelligent points.
The pressure put on women is by women. That is the biggest irony.
The fashion industry, mostly run by women and gay men is what does the most damage along with the tripe magazines like Hello and OK etc.
Your average bloke would never give a woman a hard time about putting on some pounds...

Yes and no. Yes the number of heart beats theory is correct, but NO excercise does not use them up faster. You see a fit persons heart whilst at rest beats more slowly than that of an unfit person, that means that whilst excersing for 4 hours a week will result in a faster heart rate during the excercise it will result in a slower heart rate for the other 164 hours of the week, hence a lower weekly count of heartbeats in total

Sounds a lot but when in fighting trim I'm skinny as hell and don't look particularly healthy. Also had 3 weeks of beer/food in thailand to bump that up a bit.
Once the holiday trim's gone I'll be about 7-8kg off my fighting weight. Easy lose 7kg with 5 weeks fight training.
True about fat women vs fat blokes though. Probably got somthing to do with us being genetically programmed to find a strong healthy looking specimen desireable. Something a fat balding bloke is definately not (unfortunately).
Hmmmm slightly OT but lets take 2 guys, one Fatty doesn't excercise, his mate Skinny does.
Fatty has a resting heartbeat of 75bpm, over a week fatties heart will beat 756,000 times.
Skinny on the other hand is well fit, and has a resting heart rate of 50bpm. Over the week ( including 4 hours of excercise when his heart beats at 150bpm ) his heart will beat 590,400 times....... that's 165,600 times less.

Is that really a fact? Sounds purely anecdotal to me. How could you prove it?
BTW my resting HR is around 48bpm but I have a slightly higher than desirable blood pressure. What's that all about then?

Will Fatty's heartbeat be that slow?
It has to work harder too, with all the shite in his arteries. Having said that, being slim doesn't mean you don't have high cholesterol inside you.
