I watched this movie last night and it is certainly very beautiful.

It is also more real than the other similar films (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Hero) though that doesn't say allot.

It does leave me rather cold however, all spectacle and too little emotion.

I thought this was another marital problem thread

Is it dubbed or subtitled?

Subtitled-I can't stand dubbed movies.

I love those films that have come out of the east. crouching Tiger, Hero, House of Flying Daggers. They have a style and a beauty that Hollywood haven't yet mastered! If anyone like martial arts films that are a little more grounded, then have a look at Ong-Bak. An absolute corker of a film. Also, if you like it slighty more maga style, try cashern! i thought it was brilliant!

i thought hero was a bit wayward in it's threads - I couldn't follow the flashbacks and the reasoning behind the assasination - i need to watch it again.

HOFD was beatifully shot as was CTHG but some times I felt that it was rendered in beaty and colour for it's own sake - it was too good to look at and it took you out of the film.

I was sat there watching thinking how do they do that and isn't that great rather than following the film.

just a thought

Yes I have the same feeling.

I'm going to buy it soon.

Just remember that all of his stunts, (flip through 2 panes of glass, through the barbed wire, all his wee tumbles, and flips off ledges, etc, are all done without wires etc. he actually did it. Looks like he is the new Bruce Lee! A great deal of ability, and like Jackie Chan, the ability to do it all on-screen.

I loved all three of these films and would recommend another:

Not as colourful as the others, but just as good

Agree.. there is nothing worse than hearing some really bad dubbing. Much rather have the subtitles, and not have to put up with the mouths going at a different rate as the sound!

Awesome film. I watched that "echo game" dance with the drums and the sword a bunch of times. It's just such a cool scene, and amazing that she really learned to dance like that. I find the emotional aspects of this one, Hero, Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon a little harder to catch onto, but probably due to language and culture differences. People seem to express emotions differently than in more western films.

The thing with those type films is that it is a visual experience, as much as it is a regular plot based film. The stories are great though, and the two together make them absolutely phenomenal.

am really getting into this eastern films. didnt pay any attention to crouching tiger hidden dragon... for some reason i thought it was a cartoon.

but now i've seen a few i'm hooked! i love the honour and the skill in the films, even the love aspects they weave in.

then theres films with mad plots like "battle royale"
(kids dont have enough respect... put them on an island and make them kill each other... that'll teach em!)

I've got quite a few of Beat Takeshis films. Sonatine, Violent cop, Merry Christmas Mr Laurence, Boiling point, Battle Royale I and II, and brothers. Great actor, and a man of few words!
The guy is a legend in the East.

House of flying daggers was my favourit of the genre. I liked Oldboy too. More modern.
