Last night my friends daughter who is 16 was tellng me about what they had done in their sex education class last year: how to get on the housing list when you cop for a belly full of arms and legs. Aparently the teacher was a hero at her chav school for giving such important advice.

The term before the same teacher had described her own sex life in some detail. Nice.

What happened to telling them about pubic hair and contraception?

I'm sure a complaint or two could get her severley reprimanded or, better still, the sack. She sounds like a waste of space to me.

My friend didn't want to 'rock the boat' and single our her daughter for chav revenge as her daughter is fairly grounded and thought the woman was a waster anyway.

She had them talking in a group about their first sexual exoperience and gave them all a pebble to focus their energy on prior to exams. I have tended to favour revision myself.

If this is the sort of education our children are getting it is no wonder we have the highest incidences if teenage pregnancy in Europe. I think it is the teacher who should be ashamed, not the student.

I agree, this is exactly the sort of stupid "new age" st that ought to be eradicated from our schools - and I'm a libertarian leftist!! (and an old hippie)

To be fair, the Beardlets encountered none of this at the state high school they attend(ed) - overall they have been well advised and had a genuine and caring interest taken it their development

Most of my talks at school was rubbish and more about just puberty rather than sex itself.
We had one woman come in and talk to the whole year (around Y9 I think, or 3rd year high for you older ones!! ) and she ranted on about sex being great and how we should all go out and have it if we want it so long as we're safe.
Apart from the huge number of complaints the school got for that...in the long run I can see an approach like that being far more effective at reducing STD's and teenage pregnancies.

Can anyone actually remember learning something from sex ed classes though? To be honest I can't remember them telling me anything i didn't know and i wasn't the most grown up of kids or anything. I think the trouble with teenage pregnancies is not that the kids don't know what they're doing, but that they havn't got a sense of right/wrong/sheer bloody stupid instilled in them anymore.

Cheers,
Rob.

I think they need to go right back to basic sex of sperm (cue giggles) comes out of penis (cue giggles)...if that goes into a girls vagina (cue giggles) then she could get pregnant. Doesn't matter if it's her 1st time and you cant soak it all up with a tampon/tissue. bla bla bla

After the headmaster explained that at 'certain times of the month women can get stroppy' it was straight into
'how to open a bank account'

Which proved to be very useful

For the other side of the issue watch "Texas Virgins" on one of the tv channels.

The result of a complete U turn and teaching only sexual abstinence outside marriage etc.

Some extreme quasi religious views and some screwed up kids on that documentary.

I can't remember learning anything in sex ed classes. It was mainly a list of events surrounding conception, pregnancy and birth. By the time schools teach this stuff half the kids already know it because they've been told by parents or other kids, or they are actually doing it. The other half don't listen because they never listen at school, laugh because they always laugh at any mention of sex or have something so wrong with them that the lesson is wasted anyway. By "wrong" every class has a kid with some kind of problem mental, physical or family, that makes this lesson ill advised.

My four year old knows where babies come from. I pity kids that get a "big talk" in their early teens. It must be toe curlingly embarrasing to sit through that when you already know but don't want to break the news to your folks! Must be just as bad to get this dumped on you all in one go after years of being the only kid in your class that dosen't get the sex jokes.

Our kids are stuffed if you leave teaching this to schools. Far too many competing factions with extreme views one way or the other. And most of them mad as hatters.

Ditto your sentiments Rob. FFS I watched Basic Instinct when I was 8.

I recon they should be teaching some of the consequences of teenage pregnancy and unprotected sex as my school was a real hot spot for these and got bad press for it too.

I think there are some mature students who could definitely benefit from sitting in on these lessons.

(IIRC there was a PH thread started by a bloke in which he asked whether it was possible that his g/f might be pregnant because they'd had unprotected sex and used the withdrawal method. Let's just say although it's better than nothing, it's not the most reliable form of contraception!)
