One for the legal experts :-

I need to pick up a parcel from the local Amtrak depot. Amtrak blurb says "Proof of identity plus proof of residency at the manifested address will be required (which will be copied and retained) as without it, goods cannot be released".

I'm not entirely sure I want them to have a copy of anything, as I have no idea how secure their storage/disposal methods are. Where do they stand if I produce ID but refuse to let them take a copy? Where do I stand if they refuse to issue the parcel?

Cheers.

Presumably by the collection counter?

I doubt they are doing anything illegal (stand to be corrected though) but a companies policy is theirs to enforce. They could ship it back if you didnt want to comply, no harm done (except you wouldnt get your parcel)

'Proof of residency is a posh way of saying 'utility bill'. No big deal really.

Passport will do.

I was asked to show mine when I tried to cross the US/Canada border and when I told them I only had a Credit card on me as ID they took me into a little office for a chat.

Needless to say when they worked out who I was they let me go.

They don't keep it, just look at it for ID and hand it straight back to you.

So if they leave your gas bill laying around, I can find out that a Mr Somebody lives at some address in the UK and uses x amount of gas?

Not exactly the most sensitive of information is it, given that the electoral register is in the public domain...

Wouldn't worry personally...
