Big spread in the Standard last night about 3000 people in the City who are in line for £ million + bonuses, top end estate agents and car dealers etc rubbing their hands in glee, primarily due to M&A activity.

What about the rest of us though? Oil price seems to be on a one way ride up, there is a cold wind blowing through the high street as consumers lock away their credit cards, and inflation looks as though it is going to rise, slowing growth next year.

I am having the devil's own job winning new business at the moment, so come on PHers, own up, is it good for you?

Made more money in July than the previous 6 months combined. Thought that maybe we were seeing a turnaround in what was supposed to be the quietest month and then NOTHING in the 7 weeks since. It sucks when your car payments depend on bonuses.

In tax/business rates consultation so lots of work on at the moment. Not so sure how next year will be though - there is talk that the big bonus payments are coming to an end

Yes. Right now it is good.

I agree with the UK economic outlook not being good which is why I'm scheduling in 2 years out of the UK from next July 2006 to July 2008. Depending on the state of the economy and the government we may or may not be back then.

No offence taken Commercial estate agent with a bias towards corporate relocation. Nothing to do with fees as I can undercut with the best of them. I just don't think the work is out there at the moment.

The bonuses are good news for everyone because of the trickle down effect. All that money will be spent on cars and houses, the people selling them will in turn spend the money on clothes and consumer electronics and the people selling them will, in turn, be slightly richer.

It's easy to be jealous of these bonuses (I work in the City but don't get them) but what the economy needs is more consumer spending - and that means we need more people with money to spend. Some tax cuts would be useful too.

Indeed - however, there may be a flaw in your logic. My bonus will be spent on a house in The Bahamas!!

Seems ok for me. :/

The other knock on effect of these bonuses is that the banks are usually doing well if they're paying them out - more building work, maintenance, IT spend to.

Not too shabby for me, but then I work for the market leader of a certain government-backed savings scheme.

However, it would appear that the government can't give money away to the majority of the moronic populace. Of the near-enough two million cheques for £250 sent out to new parents in the last 7 months, only 35% have taken the offer up. Cue more govt. spending on a massive campaign next month to promote the bribe, erm, I mean investment opportunity.

Well, the government shouldn't have designed such an appallingly expensive scheme. Assuming a 7% return, the costs at 1.5% will soak up 47% of the initial investment in 18 years! Not such a great investment vehicle if all you want to do is put it in a cheapo tracker fund. Mind you, there is a sneaky and cheap way of taking advantage of the CTF wrapper and getting a very cheap tracker in it . . .

I am in network security and although we are a minow in the whole market place, we are seeing a 200% quarter on quarter growth in new business (thats a new customer we havent dealt with before). So its pretty rosey for me at the moment - cant see it getting worse either as we undercut pretty much everyone else and have a technically superiour solution.....

But agree about the economy though. I dont think it will fail as such, but recent reports are suggesting a realistic growth of 1% in GDP which is pretty poor - its still a growth so shouldnt be too bad and 2006 - 2007 should be a very productive period for us. Some sectors in IT have had it tough, but security isnt one of them and general growth is lifting almost everyone I deal with. Spoke to an MD of a channel partner of ours yesterday who is looking at a major problem in managing his growth. He's looking at 25% minimum this year and maybe even more for next year - managing that type of growth is a real nightmare!!!

Might have something to do with the fact that there is a difference between having a 'low income' and having a 'low declared income' that the goverment don't quite seem to have cottoned onto yet
