I just tried putting the opening drums from Lust For Life on my phone as a ringtone thinking it would sound great - and it sounds awful.

Would a bugle call work better? Or something more bassy? Or something as bit more organy (like the beginning of Sweet Child in Time).

Basically, what frequencies work best out of tiny, tinny speakers and what instruments/keyboard preselects make them?

I like the idea of a bugle call, could get annoying real fast though...

I reckon Dom Jolly shouting 'ello as a ring tone would be quite good

Anything more than beep or ring is highly inappropriate. Although I will admit to having a siren noise on a previous phone for a text message arriving.

Musical ring tones were novel in the beginning, but, imho, they have jumped the shark at this point...

Mine is just a quick beep - beep. It is different from a standard ring, so I know that it is my phone and not one of the hundreds around me.

Mobile phones are truly the cigarettes of the 21st century. People believe it is appropriate to "mobile everywhere" when it clearly is not. Ring tones just add to that annoyance.

It has to start "A ring-ding-a-ding-ding" and end "broarrr"

I settled on some mindless pop music

I guess, as it was designed to be listed to through crappy radios, that it works on phones

Something from the 60s, 70s

I can mail it to you if you're interested (mail me through profile)

I've got THIS on my mobile at the moment. It can get annoying after a while though.

I have Chopin Etude no4 in C sharp minor.
It's distinctive, but not too annoying. I would have a normal ring sound, but the one on my phone sounds rubbish.

I find anything other than a simple ring ring a problem tone wise...

Vibration works well for me

Now have an mp3 of a Griff 500 doing a 0-60 flyby..

I used to like the "classic telephone ring" on my old phone until i read about how cool this was in one of the papers and I kept hearing it everywhere

Now I have "The hills are alive with the sound of music..."

I did it for a joke when I found out my Girlfriend was named Julie after Julie Andrews but now I have grown quite attached to it as nobody else has it

I had to make it myself you know

The frequency response of the speakers in phones is typically 300Hz - 2KHz. Instruments that sound good are those that are 'bright' with sharp attack (brass, piano, small woodwind etc.); those that don't sound as good have 'softer' sounds (strings, acoustic guitar etc.).

Regardless of the instrumentation that sounds best, there's still no accounting for taste ...

I went to the trouble of putting schnappy crocodile on my phone, taking the view that I was being ironic. Trouble is, how is anyone to know that?
