Another Ikea rant
Discussion
I know there have been a few threads about the sheer hideousness of the experience, but this is something particularly petty so bear with me.
About to move home so had to visit Ikealand this morning for new shelves for the kids' rooms and a fair few other bits and pieces. Yawn I know, and there goes a large chunk of the 911 upgrade fund :weeping:
Went to pay. Educationally sub-normal primitive at the till grunted "that will be £545.45 please". "Feck" thought I and proffered the plastic. Says ES-NP "there is a 70p surcharge if you use a credit card".
Having given up the will to live at the point at which I entered the door of the place, I just shrugged and said "ok". If people are going to spend that sort of money, and there were plenty spending even more (place was packed at 10 o'clock on Wednesday morning - doesn't anyone go to work anymore?) they are going to use plastic so why impose a surcharge of 70p on every card transaction.
Seems a bit petty imho.

Crafty.
Given the amount people spend in those places I would say hardly anyone pays in cash. Lets say an average of 10 people go through each checkout per hour. That 70p surcharge is enough to pay the wages of the checkout person.
Ta da at a stroke a cost reduction equivalent to the cost of all checkout staff, which must be one of the largest non stock expenses of running the store.

Thing is after wandering arount the store, going to the effort of picking your own goods up from the wharehouse then queueing to pay, how many people will kick up a fuss for 70p when they are spending £100's
they might as well put a turnstyle on the door and charge people a quid to get in, that way they could get £4 of the average famly before they have even spent anything

They were talking about charging for car parking at the stores, not sure whether they brought that in after.
Incidentally saw an interesting programme on the founder of Ikea, grumpy alcoholic depressive who lives in a log cabin and referred to his customers as "the many people" ( in a derisory way )
Not sure about crafty, really. GIven that the checkout queues are so long, there's plenty of time to read the notices plastered all around while staring bleakly at the muppets in front of you with the laminate flooring, who you just know will be bringing it back a week later.
Anyways, the notices do say that they get stung for 70p by VISA & Mastercard, and there is no charge for paying by debit card, so fair dos to em.

Can we have some Mod attention to this thread please..
Its not complete and I can't understand the instructions
Very funny but I have a LOT of Ikea stuff and only once was I missing a pack of screws. Customer Services department gave me a new set.
I always find their stuff goes together really easily. Would love to turn making up Ikea flat packs into a job. TVR Sagaris and a tool box, charging all over the place making things up. Much better than my current mind numbing office job at leat you would have some satisfaction at the end of the day

Is Pikea really that bad? I've never been in one.
Lucky git. It really is the 8th level of Hell.
Its not that bad, pick your time right and your in and out before you know it
Fair enough but I just hate the whole layout and philosophy of the stores; you're forced to meander around the entire store to get to the one thing you need and even if you know where the "shortcuts" are located, it just makes it easier to get lost. Even then you find that the thing you've come in for is in the warehouse section and you then have to wander aimlessly up & down the aisles desperately searching for the label "Atr½þferkÅg" in 8pt type on the side of a box 20ft up a shelving unit...

Don't tell me, somewhere, somehow, women are the driving force behind this painful ritual

I don't know about all of their stores but they certainly introduced it at Edmonton. Lasted a couple of months before the complaints from customers were so loud that they sacked it.
