Getting sick of reading about the Huntley's and Shipmans of this world? Its starting to become 'normal' news FFS!

Is it not about time we started to treat murderous crimes with the death penalty.

The latest offering from the BBC news site reads like this....

The dismembered body of a missing teenager has been found dumped near a stairwell on a housing estate.

Full story here...

Government, step it up eh ??

That is just sick. People like this do NOT deserve to be alive. Hang the cts after a good workout with the hot poker. Where is the deterrent? If a sick pervert wants to play with some child then 10 years will be worth it for the pleasure. It will be out in five years to do it all again. Oh after we have heard that old 'Lessons have been learnt. We have put in place a raft of measures to ensure this will never happen again' Yup so have I hang the !

If the sick bastards are guilty and its 100% proven then capital punishment should be the only option.
Why should we pay for them to spend 40+ years in one of our holiday camp prisons.
(They now get bigger cells, TV, playstations, better libraries than my Kids...etc)
Its a Joke...

I agree, but there needs to be some kind of system where it is only used if the conviction is 200% sure they are the right person for the crime as we can't kill the innocent, think that's one of the main reasons it got abolished, for mass murder and people deamed to be a danger to society lethal injection within weeks of the sentance in my book!

There shouldn't be a problem. How long do people stay on Death row in the States?Plenty of time for any new evidence or appeals to come up I would have thought.

I remember the huge shock that was felt in sweden (and even in Finland where I was at the time) when their foreign minister was murdered...

Murder rates there seem low.

Maybe its becuase they cut out the middle man and just kill themselves instead?

Seriously... I don't think I can ever accept the death penalty because to convict somebody you have to elimate "reasonable doubt" of their innocence. Even once this is done doubt remains and hence I think it is somewhat unsound to take a measure you cannot undo (whether by releasing someone or compensating them, or both).

DNA tests only give probabilities not clear answers...

there is a big problem in courts with the reliability and meanings of these techniques being misrepresented. This is compounded by the general public being idiots when it comes to their general scientific and mathematical knowledge. Also "experts" misrepresenting techniques etc.

And herein lies the problem - it might be a touch tricky to get 200% proof.

Referring back to what I was saying in the beheading video thread, no civilised society should be reveling in the killing of another human being. This isn't justice or punishment, it's simply revenge.

As for the deterrent issue - bollox quite frankly. Can someone please dig out the statistics for murders and the death penalty in the states please? Do you really think that someone will go "Hell I kill 'em cause I'll only get a life sentence rather than being killed"

Ever heard of Jack the Ripper? The death penalty was well and truly in place in those times and it didnt seem to deter him much.

So does locking them up.

I just don't think death is much of a punishment. After all why do people top themselves?

Yes but locking them up costs huge amounts.

It will deter some, maybe not all but some.

So are you suggesting life imprisonment?

Not sure its quite like that.

I think it would deter some potential murderers. More like "Hell I won't kill 'em cos I might get caught and killed myself".

?

Who knows?

It might just save a life or two. Nothing else is working, thats for sure.

What is the current deterant? A trip to disney, maybe?

We must never have the death penalty.

People convicted of terrible crimes must lose their liberty for the rest of their lives. No parole.

But if we kill them, we lose something ourselves. We become more like them.

We cannot go back to gallows in the town square. The cost of locking people up for the rest of their lives is the price we pay for a civilised society.
