I have been waiting for this to be posted, but clearly one of the most significant events in recent UK history has been over shadowed by the need to know about envlope sizes and drowning travellers, so..

I am not one to trust the IRA or Sinn Fein but I thought the reaction of Revvy Paisley at al to the recent announcemnet stunk. 3 independent sources say they have done the deed but the unionist just slagged it off as a lie. I just despair for NI that the views are so entrenched neither side cannow see the wood for the trees. The fact thousands of guns, RPGs and flame throwsers were trashed is something , but it was niothing to Paisley and his political allies.

Basically, the jovial cleric says: " we told you from the start we wouldn't accept it". Well I don't hear any new bright ideas coming from Ol' big mouth, save another 30 years of strife and ruined lives.

At times I want to excavate the border and set the whole lot of them adrift in the Atlantic. They deserve each other. Women, children and tolerant people in the lifeboats first.

Of course Paisley and his cronies won't accept it.

God forbid, people might start voting for concilliatory political parties.....

With the IRA 'disarmed' then a united Ireland is one step closer. Not what Unionists want.

Nice to be noted

3 independent sources were told by the IRA that they'd done the deed. Why no footage of weapons being destroyed? That's the only evidence I'd accept - and even then you wouldn't know how much they were keeping back. If I was Mr IRA I'd have made a public issue of destroying a few rifles, and kept the good stuff secret for a rainy day.

Yep. Perhaps we can swap NI for NZ?

NB Why do we have a 'peace process' that goes on for bloody years and years? WW2 ended in a few days with some bits of paper. You either make peace or you don't.

Peace cant happen in NI IMO. A cease fire can, but not peace. Peace would mean a compromise, how can you come to a compromise over a border? The IRA want a united Ireland, the Unionists dont. Neither will back down. Ever. Simple.

Very sad really, but I dont ever think there will be peace over there. They may well have trashed loads of guns, buts whats left.

Why they cant live in harmony I dont know, given up trying figure it out.

We live in an ever sadening world these days.

The other thing which has always worried me is the amount of "Decomissioned" guns, which are "Re-commissioned", is it just me, or am I right in thinking "Hey wait up, you couldnt have decomissioned them right in the first place, if someone can recomission it". Why not crush the buggers, melt them down or whatever..................

Bit like saying "If I take the steering wheel of a car, it is sucessfully decomissioned" I think not..... sorry for that little rant, but with the number of folk being injured, even killed with recomissioned guns, its about time the government woke up, and sorted it out.

And one last little rant, theres that poor ol widow got 7 days in clink for refusing to pay 55 quid council tax, and then theres the convicted rapist with 7 mill in the bank, costing the tax payer 10 grand a month in protection etc, we are basically bloody stupid, this cant be right, can it?

paisley is a first class w*nker, so are mcguiness and adams but they cannot remain without each other!

currently ireland north and south is awash with eu. money for housebuilding and the like, this is sidelineing the religous bigots and they dont like thier control being eroded!

the sooner people like paisley and gerry adams are ignored the better!

Shirepro, I had considered posting something about the decommissioning, But I was afraid that a post like that by v8 above would come along and I'd be sin binned. So I'll give this as a response and I'll leave it there:

Nope. I deleted what I was about to post. V8, thats just silly. All of it.

Although I have VERY strong views about this subject I feel it is just far too complex and since I don't understand every angle I'm keeping my mouth firmly shut....ish.

Good response "Dubs". One can end up arguing in ever INCREASING circles on this topic.

The appropraite point to make on the NI situation is, that, at the moment at least, the Province is experiencing the most peaceful period in the last 36 years. Maybe that's the best anyone can hope for at the moment.

In the last 35 years the IRA has NEVER EVER TOLD THE TRUTH! Paisley and his mad´men are just as bad, but there IS NO PROOF that the IRA has done ANYTHING, all they've done is tell chosen "witnesses" that they've done something.... If your family was endangered by these criminals would YOU believe them????? I certainly don't and won't until some visible and quantifiable proof is available, as must be also for the Unionist madmen!!!!
All IMHO of course......

So...........

What do you do next then?

There's no point in ranting and raving about what the IRA have or haven't done. The important thing about politics in NI is making gestures and symbolic shifting of stances. Progress has only been made when these types of events have occured. Over the past 10 years huge progress has been made. However, the situation is far from perfect and perhaps never will be (after all, NI is a very artificial construct) but, as I said earlier, at least the bulk of the population who live there can now go about their daily lives without the sense of dread that had become the norm.

Just out of interest did the IRA keep these "decomissioned" weapons and if so why?

Playing Golf for the day, and the drivel on this topic continues. Eric, leave them at it, as you said it'll go round in circles for years.

what's the point of 'independent' witnesses, plus Gen. John De Chastelain saying it has happened, so that the good Rev. Paisley can say 'yaa boo sucks, I don't believe it'?

Think about it...say for a minute that the provos have actually disarmed...than all the pressure is on unionist paramilitaries to do the same - precious little is said about the arms that 'loyalist' gangs hold. Please remember that all the recent violence in the province where shots were fired at the police, etc, were fired by loyalists - even the orange order marchers were getting violent with the police.

I agree with the post that says that both sides are into 'other' activities, but Paisley and his ilk will only ever be happy when the nationalist community are back under the thumb.

Tin Hat firmly on....

The fact of the matter is that the IRA are no longer bombing civilians either in NI or the British Mainland.

I think we should all just be pretty happy about that.

Well...........Look, I'm a Protestant Engishman with no particular axe to grind either way....but!

We are FORCED to look at history here and how the whole situation became to be. WE are FORCED to recognise that the UDA is after all leftover of a "Conservative" Land grabbing right wing "British Elite" who have used their right wing "power" through secret societies and "Lodges" etc to discrimate against the Catholic population for 400+ years........

If you disagree with me, then, that's fine, I don't have a problem with it, just read your history.

I'm simply stating: the truth.

From a W.A.S.P...."Ireland should be....one nation!"

How they achieve that without annilalating each other.....is up to them!......
