I need to transfer some money to Hungary on a regular basis, not a large amount but a small regular amount.

It seems all the banks want to charge me £25/transaction.

Anyone know of a cheaper, but safe, way?

Visa cash advance?

Bung the credit card into the hole in the wall with draw cash. If you prepay the credit card you might not even get charged for the transaction

I used to have to do this with Greek drachma. The only way I could do it was to have the drachmas sent to me and convert them into GBP in the bank. Unbelievable in this day and age.

Why not just set up a UK bank account - an account with ATM access, then regularly transfer £x into it monthly.

If you send the recipient your ATM card - they could withdraw in local cash in Hungary , from your account in the UK - would cost £1.50 per transaction.

hmmmmm - but you would need to trust them not to use the cash card as a credit card - could be risky.

What about Western Union money transfer ?

Can you not simply send a sterling cheque? I'm sure the bank in hungary would charge a small fee for cashing it / paying it into an account, but surely not as much as £25...

It usually not far off £25 even in Hungary.

Ask the recipient if they have a Euro account. If you have euro account set up, it is usually a very easy transfer.

/Realworldmodeon/

Try setting up an account with someone like Rothchilds in Jersey. (Abbey National International etc.)

They allow currency exchange between US $, EU €, £, etc. I dunno what Hungary uses as a currency but it will allow you to send the money in £ and transfer it to another currency.
