Vancouver is 'best place to live'
Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin raises his glass during a speech
Canadians have a lot to toast in terms of liveability, the EIU reckons
Vancouver is the world's best place to live, a survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has found.

The EIU ranked 127 cities in terms of personal risk, infrastructure and the availability of goods and services.

All the cities that fell into the top "liveability" bracket were based in Canada, Australia and Western Europe.

The worst places were Algiers in Algeria, and Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea because "many aspects of daily life present challenges", the EIU said.

Safe havens?

Canadian cities scored well, as did Austria's Vienna and Switzerland's Geneva, because they are not seen as targets for terror attacks.

The main uncertainty for people living in the those cities are climate-related, the EIU said.

"In the current global political climate, it is no surprise that the most desirable destinations are those with the lower perceived threat of terrorism," said Jon Copestake, editor of the EIU report.

The survey has produced a mixed picture of the world's cities. London was ranked in the 10th group, on a par with Dublin and Los Angeles, but one place below Manchester, four behind Berlin, five lower than Tokyo, and six off Helsinki, Frankfurt and Stockholm.

In Latin America, "no city manages to present ideal living conditions, neither do any fall into the category where extreme difficulties are faced", the EIU said.

Montevideo in Uruguay, Santiago in Chile and Buenos Aires in Argentina offer the region's best conditions. Bogota in Colombia and Caracas in Venezuela score the least favourably.

In Asia, cities in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, China and Taiwan all score well, as do Australia's main hubs.

Africa and the Middle East fare less well, with the EIU citing concerns about terror attacks, and economic and political instability.

Some of the worst performing cities include Harare in Zimbabwe and Lagos in Nigeria. [/quote]

So all the boring cities scored highly because not even terrorists can be bothered to attack  Though Melbourne and Sydney have been repeated singled out by OBL and co. so go figure

They said personal safety, which includes crime rates as well as risk of Terrorism.

Is anyone surprised London is so poorly placed?, i'm not.

Toronto made the top 10

I was there about a month ago and it's a hideous sprawling place......I couldn't wait to get out!

Can understand Perth being on the list as it's clean, warm and beautiful......oh and all my family live there

I just got back from there and loved it! I was in the centre though - perhaps you were in the suburbs?

That's all Toronto needs. Residents there already think they're the be-all & end-all in Canada, centre of the universe, etc... This will just inflate their oversized egos even more.

Mind you, it's not the most affordable place in the world to live, and Vancouver's worse. At least with Vancouver people are more laid back and you're only 2 hours drive away from some of the best skiing on the planet!

I honestly don't think there are better places to live than southern England. And I am an immigrant before you ask!

I love living in London - but guess it all depends on what you look for. I like the diversity, history, culture, transport, food, shops, bars, people - never been much of a wide-open spaces person. I never feel threatened or unsafe.

London's an amazing city, but I wouldn't live there unless I had a lot more money so that's a fair point. I would only want to live somewhere like Chelsea. However I enjoy being just outside so I can enjoy the pretty parts of the country and dip into London life whenever I want.

Is there much infrastructure and availability of goods and services though?

As for Geneva, I had several bloody scary moments there and had to leg it at one point. Didn't expect that.

This list is utter rubbish. Most of the cities on the list (I'll except Sydney and Vancouver) are dull as ditchwater. That Frankfurt should be above London is laughable. I know I've lived there twice. It's fine, but stultifying. Helsinki is a nice place for a visit, but you would not want to live through the winter there. It's dark almost all day and bloody cold.

As for London, if you can afford to live in the nice areas, it's a great place to live.
