Bins and Councils
Discussion
Woking Council, in all its Wisdom (read none) has decided that we can no longer be trusted to put our rubbish sacks out every wednesday.
So they gave a few householders two wheelie bins, one for recycling and one for normal waste. Each is collected every two weeks, alternating.
It was found in this study that
1) the rubbish rotted and smealt terrible because people left it in the bins for two weeks
2) Youths kicked over the bins
3) they made streets look horrible
4) People kept getting the wrong things in the bins
5) over 70% wanted a return to the old style of collections
So , after this carefull study, they are rolling it out across the town.. at a cost of £1 million. Despite no one wanting it..
Just makes me :furious:

Exactly the same as LB Sutton. After several pictures in the local rags of the brown bins heaving with maggots (no one eating at the moment I hope) the council graciously agreed to go back to collecting rubbish every week.
1 to 4 are spot on but I would add that bins are also thieved and the council will then want you to pay for the next one!
Woking are not LibDem by any chance are they, or does this madness cros the political divide?
Near Lowestoft. We also have the stupid 3 bin system. You must remember to take stuff out of the bags before placing in bin. The only ones gaining from this is the Solo company (makers of the bin)
Just think in the days go past they used to come into your garden sling the bin over their shoulder and place ant powder round the bin also any crud near the bin old bike bits prams etc were also taken.
What bloddy annoys me though is they take your green waste, bag it up and sell it back you!!
Council tax?? HA!
Added: Conservative council.

My local council has had this in operation for a couple of years now. It does make the streets look a mess with 2 bins for every house, plus a white sack for paper waste and a green box for glass. With the collections every 2 weeks it can be a pain, but worst of all, woe betide if you put the wrong rubbish in the wrong bin as the jobsworths of bin-men wont empty it at all, so it can go 4 weeks without being emptied. Then when a couple of weeks later its very full and if the lid does not shut flush, they dont have to attempt to move it in case of injury to themselves.
My local council collect rubbish from bins once a week and have smaller green bins for recycling which I think gets picked up every two weeks but I dont know as they never gave me a small green bin.
I should really ask for a green bin but i have nowhere to put it. I usually take bottles, cans & paper to the recycling bins when going shopping so still doing my thing

Well, they have a good system here in MK!
You just put your rubbish out in whatever bin bags you like, you can recycle if you wish but it is not enforced. They provide bin bags for this purpose free of charge.
Every monday night everyone puts the bags out and they are all gone by tuesday morning. They are quiet too, one person walks the street and puts all the little piles of bags into a few big piles and then the lorry comes along and only has to make a couple of stops and there is none of that noisy pneumatic wheelie bin lifting equipment required!
The recycling vehicle comes round once a week too i think. I am most impressed.
It was stupid in London, and has got even worse from what I understand!

Don't start me on on bins ....
Off-topic for this specific thread, but still bin-related ....
They built 8 houses/flats directly next to my local train station - the total area of approximately 8 metres x 20. If you are fortunate enough to overlook platform 1, youc an reach out of your window and almost touch the railings on platform 1.
Anyway ... when these 'affordable properites' were built, there was no consideration given to the storage of bins and/or waste.
As a result the occupiers of the 8 properties used to dump all their rubbish in the train station bins.
The train guys sussed this, so removed all the bins, with 2 consequences ....
1: the occupiers now use the local Waitrose to dump all their rubbish (but not for much longer)
2: Because the train platforms have no bins, passengers are now chucking their rubbish over the platform railings, into the said properties above.
Because of #2, it's now considered Rat Heaven, with more and more moving in every day.
So now it's a public health issue, the Environmental Health folks will probably get involved.
The occupiers have complained to the council and it transpires that the building of bin cupboards, etc was [alledgedly] 'overlooked'.
The problem is .... there's no room to build any - unless they give up their [postage stamp] gardens - highly unlikely.
And who cares?
No-one.
K
P.S. for record - I don't live in one of the 8 properties above - but I do take Kinky junior and the dog for a walk along that path. Absolutely gross.

this madness aflicts in the pennines also...
after 14 months we still dont have a refuse wheelie bin, just a blue recycling bin and a green box for i dont know what...
wont pay the £20 for a new brown bin - since we never had one since moving in. - we just take all our rubbish to the tip up the road every weekend.

We have had this two bin system for years and it really is not a problem as long as residents are sensible. I have never had maggots or flies in my bin, although on the few occasions I have fouled up it has smelt rank!
I know some people complain about it but I am sure they must generate a lot of rubbish. Even with a baby in nappies we find it no problem.
Something has to be done about rubbish in this country as we are running out of landfill and the same people who complain about 2 bins don;t want an incinerator next door. So therefore reduce the rubbish by collecting it less often. Simple.
We need to generate less rubbish and if this bin collection assists in that then all well and good.
Now back to my lentils!

We have 3 bins, a Black, a Brown and a Green. Black for general rubbish, Green for Recycleable stuff and Brown for garden waste. Black is collected 1 week and the other 2 the week after. My Black bin gets full after a week and the others almost empty. a reduced service and no reduction in council tax.
I think these bins are great, 1 black for general waste and 1 brown for green waste.
You can just hoy any old shite into the bin without bagging it first like cat litter, big pizza boxes etc.
OK the bin gets full but no big deal, I can put the bin out and any amount of bags and it all gets collected, the binman's a top geezer, I gave him a fiver one xmas for a few beers and now if I forget to put the bin out he goes round the back of the house to collect it.

We have a 2 bin and 2 mini bin system here. 1 is for organic matter i.e. garden waste collected fortnightly, another is for daily trash collected fortnightly, 1 mini bin is for non glossy paper and other reusable papers, and the other is for tins, and plastic bottles, containers etc.
It seems to work very well here as we have a problem with foxes (which are the size of medium sized dogs !!) savaging our black bin bags in the night, plus you do get a feel good feeling knowing you've tried to do your bit for recycling
