One of the prospective tory leaders said yesterday in his speech that schools should display the union flag.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with that to be honest.

Oh and thanks for posting that link, some of the bloody vegetablist comments beneath the story have sent my blood pressure off the chart.

I'm not sure how a nations flag can be misinterpreted as racist. Its a nations flag. the person waving it, shouting racist things can be considered racist, but not the flag. Do they not realise than nationalistic groups WILL use their nations flags. its pathetic. But we can't blame the minorities for this. Its the act of the PC brigade getting in there first, just in case..

This one especially (Second comment in article):

Some idiotic turd said:
I believe it is about time we scrapped the British flag and St Georges flag. After all what is the point in having a flag if wearing it brands you a racist? The fact is racists have used out nations flag as a badge, and whatever our good intentions they continue to use it.

British Airways scrapped the flag some years back, recognising that the British flag had no place in a muti national company. We need to replace our flags now and reignite our proud to be British views, with a new flag as it's emblem.

BA didn't scrap the Union Jack. It's represented, but not as before. Hence, blue, red and white colour scheme.

Another case of treason I say......

BA has never actually featured the Union Flag on its tails. When BA was formed in 1974, it adopted a livery which was based on a "Half Union Flag/Arrow" motif as used by the now defunct airline, British European Airlines.

This was changed in 1984 by essentially "reversing" the blues and the reds on the fin - which, which made the logo even less like a Union Flag.

In 1997 the ill-fated multi-ethnic schemes were introduced which went down like the proverbial lead balloon. One of the "ethnic" logos was called "Chatham Dockyard" which was very loosly based on the Union Flag and was reserved for Concorde and some 767 and 777s. This was formally adopted as the official BA livery when the whole "ethnic" thing was dropped.

Going back further, before BEA adopted their "Arrow" livery in 1968, neither they nor BOAC nor the original Imperial Airways ever featured Union Flags as part of their colour schemes (apart from very small Union Flags positioned on the nose).

Do you think so? I don't, this sort of story is just Daily Mail Hate fodder. There are more important things to get upset about than a flag.

You think so?? I don't! The brave sailors at Trafalgar looked at the flag on the ships for inspiration, as did the soldiers at Waterloo, and the people who fought and died for our freedom and way of life in the 1st and 2nd World War, I also recall the flag being re-planted on the Falklands too!
Normal, everyday UK citizens aren't making this an issue, its the rancid PC slime that has infested our councils and government that are making it an issue!
Also, if 'There are more important things to get upset about than a flag', try doing the same in Iran, USA, France, India, or any other country for that matter, and you'll see just how important having a sense of National identity is. Millions have died to preserve our national identity, and I find it sad that we are 'conditioned' by spineless morons to look upon our own flag with disgust!

The standard response.

Any protest about the destruction of the traditions of our country are met by cries of 'this is daily mail rantings'

Dear Beanbag, why did you put the union jack within your original posting? The arguement was regarding the ENGLISH cross of St. George not the cobbled together Welsh/Irish/English/Scottish thingy that chavs turn into vests.

I am ENGLISH first, British second it also really pisses me off that I have to but I live in the United Kingdom.....NO I DON'T I LIVE IN ENGLAND!

iirc BA actually lost sales when they made the famous change in 97. they did a bit of research around the world and discovered that non UK citizens flew BA precisely because it was British. Far from seeing the word "British" as being a bad thing it was viewed with great warmth throughout the world. The flag reinforced the Britishness of the airline.

the ethnic thing became a farce when they discovered (idiot) bob ayling (or whatever his name was) was colour blind and had had the final say on all the designs.

I do like the Anonymous quote on the Radio 1 site, defending the flag, and ending the post "Long live St. George!"

I wonder if he knows that St. George was from Palestine.

I really don't know what to say to Chris Watton's spittle-flecked rant except:

"yes you're absolutely right."

Personally, I think both national flags have been chavved right out. If you don't agree, have a look at the type of cars that have those dirty, worn out St Georges flags fluttering from them. Mostly they're displayed by cars, the type and condition of which we'd prefer not to be on the roads. Same goes for the often fat and tattooed people inside - and the husband/fathers usually no better either .

There are two big St George crosses fluttering at a big boot sale site near here. I sort of thought, yup, that sums England up for a lot. A place for the masses to go, who have no more imagination than to trawl round those god-awful places wasting money on cheapskate and often nicked tat.

For my money, I think I'd prefer the situation where national flags can only be displayed for proper and sombre reasons. In other words, we should have more respect for the flag.

Well I knew that wearing a St George cross into Scotland wasn't necessarilly a good idea, but in this instance it does seem to me that the very fact that prisoners are prisoners means that they have given up any rights by their own actions.

....and where do you reckon this leaves the Americans, other than on almost as dodgey ground as the French must be on.

Hardly a 'spittle-flecked rant', I was merely expressing my opinion! Or am I being pigeon-holed into the 'Daily Mail Reader category' for having the sheer audacity to speak up for what I believe?

I also echo the sentiments in heebeegeetee's last paragraph in his post

agree with the last post.

just looking around the trading floor (of a foreign-owned bank) that i work on, and virtually all of the flags are England or Union Jack flags - they really brightens up the place; especially when the footie or cricket is on.

yet near where i live, when i see one on a car (often a BMW - oh the irony) or house (often but not always, with a wiff of pikey-ness), i find myself walking a bit faster and looking away. dunno why.

Fair enough, that was a cheap shot, but I couldn't resist. Read back the post, you can almost hear the retired general bellowing from under his bushy moustache about how the country's "going to the bl00dy dogs!"

Myabe the problem is that the Union Flag has not been treated with due respect for decades. In the US, the flag is revered and therefore treated in a very reverential manner.

Over here, beginning in the 60s, you could see the Union Flag plastered over all sorts of products, t-shirts, aprons, plastic bowler hats, ties, post cards, the rooves of Minis, pop group drum kits etc etc etc. The flag became an icon of Swinging Britain and therefore stopped being a patriotic symbol and became a marketing logo, just like the McDonalds "M" or the "Coca Cola" name. Maybe if the governments of the 60s had been a bit more protective of the flag it would not have been cheapened in the first place.
