What ever next!!

Shouldn't they be pushing for greater awarness and common sense whilst driving or crossing the road.

I notice they cited results from America.

4x4 in this country are rather smaller and I believe a test on 5th gear showed that some are safer for a pedestrian than conventional cars.

Not sure how that will work... Is it supposed to give said runover pedestrian something to read while being driven over?

The researchers claim that the results are based on European data - read the whole article.

Yes this is true. Not a fact that the blinkered would like to acknowledge of course.

No it didn't it said "However, the Irish researchers said they had looked at European research, and their findings were valid for cars used in Europe, as well as the US." Not the same thing at all.

So what it probably meant was that the results were valid for American SUVs used in Europe.
Most American SUVs are based on pickups or such - designed to be commercial vehicles first, cars second. 4x4s in Europe are frequently designed to be cars first with an (often exaggerated) offroad capability. Safety of the occupants has never been better - now they are wanting to force the emphasis on the safety of others in a collision.
I would argue against this method as beneficial for "safety" as no accident would always be preferable. Hence the greater visual field offered by SUVs would offset the disadvantage of the severity in the event of a collision.

Aaahh.. I remember the good old days of the green cross man, and metal mickey giving us the how to's of crossing the road. That was back in the olden days when pedestrians took some responsibility for their actions. It is now all entirely the fault of the child killing, enviroment murdering car that pedestrians have little knowledge of how to cross the road. When was the last time you saw a green cross code type advert on the tele?

He was darth vader you know... Not as frightening without his big black binlid on!

Thought this was funny!

Warning:
This vehicle is not politically correct and by driving it you are exposing yourself to the risk of villification by those who preach blind hate. Being slightly taller than most private cars, this vehicle has a significantly increased risk of road rage, snide comments and petty vandalism.

By purchasing this vehicle you are liable for all the worlds ills including but not limited to, famine, war, pestilence, climate change and every death, ever.

What rubbish, this is the theory of envy, if I cannot have one no one can, but we will make it look irresponsible to own one instead.
Next will be sports cars etc etc.

Depends if they have bull bars on the front. I have been hit by a conventional car when crossing the road when I was younger, not fun but a lot better than getting clouted in the head by a bull bar

Right so what they are saying is that a bit like fag packets there should be a government health warning painted onto an SUV?

Surely by the time you've read:

"IT'S GONNA HURT IF THIS TRUCK HITS YOU"

from the front bumper, it's a bit late isn't it?

Usual bollox from people who are jealous that they can't own a 4x4

www.euroncap.com/

a truly great site that shows a large number of super minis to be as dangerous if not more to pedestrians than off roaders..
