Brynmawr near Newport, Gwent
Discussion
Anybody know it?
I went there some years ago and it was, politely a SH1T hole. A very violent place as I recall where evrone had bitten off noses (and the men were no better). It may have course have improved of late but now my daughter is on for buying a new house on a new Persimmon Homes site just off the heads to the valeys road called 'Lakeside' (aren't they all?). She assures me it is some distance from the ghetto Chav City that I recall Brynmawr to be.
Anybody know the area or the site?
I have done all the upmystreet and Gov checks, sounds like it has got no better (poor schools, high unemployments, high proportion of low income househiolds, high proportion of council housing). Crime rate isn't to bad any more (Welshavg) She has been told it is 'up and coming' but I fear that was either an estate agent or a blind hermit with terminal optimism.

It may be near the heads of the valleys road but lack of new industry up there seems to contribute to a lack of social ethics, they're all still miners in there heads i think. From what ive seen of the area lately improvements have been made but they may be better off moving a little south.

My best mate (29 yrs old) bought a 4 bed townhouse with his g/f on that development and moved in about 3 months ago. mail me off line so I don't forget to reply as I haven't really time to do so right now. I'm also pretty sure he'd be happy to speak with you or your daughter direct (he's on hols for a week at mo) to give you his thoughts. His house is right opposite the current site office near the new Asda.

I don't think miners lack(ed) social ethics. Before they were trashed by Mrs T the mining communities around where I live weren't bad at all.

I totally agree with you. There are few peoples as warm, welcoming and big hearted as the South Welsh (even when they find out you're from Anglesey!
). Whilst there are bad apples I have been to the ex-mining communities and their people are everything you would expect. In spades.
Well...the South Welsh are larger than life in everything they do! esselte said:

Why oh why must the blame always like with Thatcher! Yes she had the confrontation. Yes she planned to win. (The stockpiles of coal were ENORMOUS). But whatever government had been in power at the time would have been forced to do the same.
If you can import coal more cheaply than you can get your own out of the ground then simple economics dictate it makes sense to do the former - and try and find something else to do that you can compete at.
I am convinced that mining will come again to the UK...as economics makes it worthwhile again. But hopefully technology will have moved on to the point where we don't have to send our young men down into the dark to die of silicosis.

Lakeside is near the site of the former Dunlop Semtex (no, not that sort of semtex) factory. I worked in the raw materials labs there many years ago.
The factory started off making assorted rubber goods, and then rubber and plastic flooring. Raw materials included lots of unpleasant stuff - including carcinogens and asbestos.
The builders have probably done a good job of cleaning up the site, but I'm not sure that I would be keen to buy a house there.

i stay in digs at the edge of calne in wiltshire, and everybody i speak to says stay out of calne after dark!....it looks ok in daylight, nothing special, but not particularly violent, but apparently after dark it changes!
I'm not far from there myself, never had any issues with Calne, the local louts hang around the library at night, but apart from that it seems OK.
