:wavey: Morning campers,

Now this may seem like an odd question to ask but please bear with me on this...............

A few people have told me recently that exceeding a certain amount of coffee consumption per day is bad for you.
Now obviously this is common sense, what with the caffeine (sp?)in non de-caf, but how much is too much?

I know I drink a lot of coffee (about 12 cups a day) and I can't stand tea :yuck: but am I drinking too much?

And what harm, if any, will it do me?

Question is, do you take sugar? I'd be more worried about that if you did.

I believe there are alleged connections with heart disease because of its stimulant properties.

No I don't take sugar but I do have plenty of mints handy to clear the coffee breath!

Just nicked from a quick google;

Though moderate caffeine intake isn't likely to cause harm, too much can noticeably affect your health. Heavy daily caffeine use — more than 500 to 600 mg a day, or about four to seven cups of coffee — can cause:

Restlessness
Anxiety
Irritability
Muscle tremors
Sleeplessness
Headaches
Nausea, diarrhea or other gastrointestinal problems
Abnormal heart rhythms

Tea actually has more caffeine in than coffee so don't worry about switching to that!

I think in this Over PC/Nanny State that we live in, everything is bad for you, although alternating the cups of coffee with glasses of water might be a good idea as 12 does seem excessive...

There is more caffiene in a pound of tea than a pound of coffee but per cup they are about equal as you use less tea.

But what would we drink with our cigarettes if we gave up coffee?

Coffee also has a mild laxative effect - if you cut out 12 cups a day you might find yourself a little bunged up for a while...

Nothing is bad for you when taken in moderation, but I would have thought 12 cups is a bit much. I'm not a doctor or anything, but it just sounds like alot.

I've just finished my fourth cup this morning and the kettle is already calling again. I don't see the point in worrying about coffee if you're a smoker

I read somewhere that it can fend off dimensia in old age as the caffine coats the brain cells and prevents them from de-grading.

I quite like hot chocolate so I suppose I could alternate it with that?

I am a couple of pots a day person too.
I drink my coffee black, no sugar so at least it is just the caffeine to worry about.
However if you use good coffee, Arabica beans only, and ABSOLUTELY NO FILTHY INSTANT, this helps as higher quality coffee has less caffeine than cheap stuff.
Balance it out with plenty water, caffeine dehydrates big time.
I have stopped taking anything other than fruit before noon so this has reduced my intake however, if i get to around 3-4pm and I haven't had any coffee things get very dark. Then the headache starts.

Dont worry - i drink about 30 cups a day (black with sugar).. and have done for years, no ill effects here!

The only problem you have to worry about is the addiction to the caffiene..
