Discount for 100-year-old driver

A 100-year-old motorist has been given an insurance discount because he hadn't had an accident in more than 80 years of driving.

Belgian Cyriel Delacauw still drives his car every day to the shops, the billiard hall or a local river to go fishing.

He said: "I've driven around here for eight decades and I've watched all the traffic lights and signs gradually grow around me, I know exactly where everything is.

"Today's beginner drivers act like they were born in a jungle. I may only ever go 25 miles an hour but at least I'm safe."

Delacauw says he plans to keep driving "until I'm 110".

His insurance company did not reveal what the new low rate premium was but added: "With 80 years of no claims bonus the annual fee is not a lot."

Depends. If he drives on their motorways at 25mph then he should be stopped and ticketed - one day he'll get a ban.

I'll bet he doesn't though.

I'll bet he pootles around from his home to the shops and back - probably never leaving a 30mph limit - so how bad is doing 25-30mph then?

If I come up behind the older generation doing 45mph around the country roads - I just overtake 'em. Strangely most of 'em don't seem to mind...its the odd tool that makes the story for PH, of course...

jesus what a liability, just a matter of time before the classic oap auto transmission motoring incident of "i accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake" resulting in them demolishing the frontage of their local co op.

Actually it has been statistically proven here that older drivers present no more of a hazard than other age groups, hence they have abolished the re-test for drivers here (I think they used to make it when you turned 80 there was a compulsory re-test every other year).

If you hit a vehicle because it is slow moving I think you are breaking one of the most basic safety rules of driving which is to drive for the road you can see ahead of you. I could understand concerns if a driver was holding up traffic however (Unlikely in a rural area however).

Good on the man, 80 years of accident free motoring under his belt and I hope he can spend the rest of his days enjoying a quiet drive. I hope I’m still motoring when I’m 100!

So - we could big insurance savings if we had our cars limited to 25mph...?

The average speed of my typical journey is about 33mph anyway, so I'm not far off as it is...
