Ok guys and girls, I need some advice.

Its my mums birthday at the start of November, and have been racking my brains trying to think of a present. I finally decided that a mint present would be a private reg. plate. My dad thinks this is a really good idea as well, but some people think that "if you are going to buy something like that, it has to be a proper one", i.e. a expensive just single digit and then letters jobby.

What do you think?

If you get one, a degree of taste is required to prevent it looking very naff.

ie. Avoid ones that require silly spacing and coloured screw heads to make any sense.

No stupid spacing, just something like V22, then her name (shortened slightly) at the end. No spacing/screws. She's very particular, but do you (and I know this is probably a pointless question as you don't nkow her)think she'll like it?

Argh, this is confusing!

If it's something you think she'd like then yeah go for it sounds brill.

Do you have an idea of the sort of "personalisation" she'd like?

I think the normal ones from the DVLA website are a great gift. £250 all-in for many of them, and it's the kind of gift that's gonna be appreciated and 'used' for many years to come.

Everyone is right; stick to the standard types (letter, number, three letters) and you can't really go wrong.

Cool, thanks. Its a standard DVLA one, £400 (), no wierd spacing or lettering. I figured that it would be a good present because it would last and be used a hell of a lot for a long time.

Wow, is this possibly a half decent idea?

I think it's a great choice of gift, so long as the recipient doesn't think they're pretentious or anything.

Better than buying her an acre of the Moon or something like that!

If your dad thinks its a good idea, then do it, after all he should know what she would and wouldn't like............well as much as any man can. If she doesn't like it, you can always share the blame with him.

I'm sure she will, it shows originality and alot of thought.

Probably a bad time to point out that my parents are divorced then.....although it does make it easier to blame him if she doesn't like it

I suppose it depends on yopur Mums age but you could send her away for a couple of days for a spa weekend with a friend (ie another lady so they can have a girls time away.......) IMHO they will never stop talking about it and it is a great one for them to drop into conversation .... which they seem to like to do...

Number plate would do it for me as well but..... they are not every ones cup of tea... and could she "discuss" it with her friends for hours...

Could be wrong but half the pleasure mothers seem to derive from their presents is the one upmanship over their friends.... in a nice subtle way of course.

I'm just waiting for a sudden rush of women furiously denying that

Spa day, well not her kind of thing, she'd never find the time to go and do it and then she'd complain about everything. Example, fully paid trip for a weekend to Wick, Scotland. Group flown by private jet, collected from plane by convoy of all black clean discoveries, had whole castle to themselves, spa treatments, the whole works. The massage room was too cold, the towels were too small, the pool was cold, things creaked.

I reckon a number plate would be a good idea, and she'd be able to show it off very easily .
