Anyone been to Iceland?
Discussion
I've bought myself a fantastic new book about the earth's natural wonders, with a view to getting inspiration about new places to go on hols. I reckon Iceland looks pretty awesome! So, a few questions:
When is the best time of year to go?
Where's a good place to stay?
What's worth seeing and what's not?

I have been twice , first time was for 3 months.
Go in Summer.
I was on an expedition , so stayed in tents most of the time at the various ice-caps etc. (sorry , don't know any hotels off-hand )
Scenic spots : Gulfoss , Geysir, LLangjokull (near Gulfoss), Skaftafell / Vatnajokull areas ( big ice cap- very scenic ) , Oraefajokull (sp?) , Thorsmork , Myvatn.
Reykjavik is ok for a day or 2 - but the best stuff in Iceland is the outdoor scenery / trekking / birdlife etc.
ALmost forgot - the scenery at the outdoor swimming pool in Reyjavik (next to campsite ) was superb

I went in July. One word of warning- expensive.
There is loads of stuff to do, trips etc.
My girlfriend organised it all as a surprise, i turned upat heathrow with my speedos and suncream and she prompty swapped my bag for one full of coats and hats.
We went in July, it was still cold, and it didn't ever get dark. She booked everything before we went through a travel agent in rekjavik (which is a really small town like some sort of medium size fishing port)
It was cool, but everything cost a bloody fortune. We stayed at Radison sas 1066 (or something like that) which appeared to be the best hotel in the town/city or as near as damn it. Try 350 squid a night (we didn't pay that mind, long story involving 2 free upgrades!)
Pizza and beer for 2 in cheapest place we could find £40, nice looking place, just for a main course £100.
Example of trips we did
whale watching
snowmobiles
volcanos
georthermic stuff
waterfalls
geezers
and all that sort of stuff
if you fancy a drink, prepare to buy duty free at the airpost and then sit on a park bench like some sort of 15 year old
Bowl of soup, try £9; 2 coffee and pastry, yours for £25.
Did I mention it was expensive?

I went there last year in June. Was very expensive but well worth it.
I can recommend Arctic Experience, did one of their 2 week 'ride drive' holidays
petrol didn't seem any cheeper over there

Thanks great web-site!
Yep, went in sept with "Discover the World" on a whale watching trip and then extended with an extra few days in Reyjkavik.
Brilliant place, loved it. Some bits pricey, e.g. diner at Perlan in Reyjkavik. Food good, wine donate a kidney first, view from there is out of this world.
It's a place for getting out into the greta ourdoors and is totally cool.
Can recommend a day trip round the "Golden Circle" with a company called Highlanders in one of their super jeeps - power oversteer and drifting in a big 4*4 - superb.

It's a brilliant place and I'd thoroughly recommend it.

I went for a long weekend in March a few years ago, and did a lot of the stuff mentioned here. Very expensive, very cold, and to be honest, Reykjavic's architecture is a bit ugly (unless you like corrugated iron houses) but I loved every minute!
There, that hasn't helped you at all has it!
Oh, while I remember, I did a lot of the tourist sites by local bus, which is a hell of a lot cheaper than organised tours!
