what the hell can i use? being a student i dont really have that many things in paper, certainly none from 3 years ago. i was told that my driving licence is only a proof of id not address, and that my pass plus certificate with my address on is not proof.

can i ring my bank up and ask them to do a letter and get the manager to sign it or something?

What on earth requires proof of address for the last three years? Three months maybe (in which utility bills or the above will suffice), but three years???

Usually find passport + utility bills = proof of id + proof of address...

You might be able to ask for a selection of previous bank statements (saying you've lost them) but you'll have to pay for any duplicates - although I'm not sure whether you'll just get copies of the financial information without an address.

The other option might be to go to the local council and get copies of the electoral register. As this is only updated annually then if you've moved around a lot it may not help.

For future reference - more and more employers are doing CRB checks on new employees so I would suggest you hang on to future bank statements and bills etc.

Lie, and say that you've been living with your folks for the last 3 years? As a student, that's probably your "permanent" address anyway.

It isn't necessarily lying anyway. You can quite justifiably claim to be domiciled (ie. your legal place of residence) at the parential address whilst being away from there for extended periods (ie. during term time), especially if you remain on the Electoral Register at the parential address.

finance for a car, god knows why

I've never come across car finance that needs proof of previous address (and car finance is my job...) - you usually need proof of signature (full driving licence) and recent proof of current address. Of course different finance companies have different criteria and will often impose particular restrictions on an individual deal (particularly if you have a low credit score, for example)

As a rule, address proofs need to be one of the following, and must be dated within the last 90 days -
Utility bill, bank statement, credit card bill, landline (not mobile) phone bill, solicitor's letter or mortgage offer.

If you can't provide the above, talk to your dealer -
after all, they want to get their car paid for! A good Business Manger should work bloody hard to get your deal sorted.

Let me know if you need more help

not yet, you need to be credit searched (note: not scored) and then print it off going back three years - this will show your address on the voters roll. I should point out that if you're not on the voters roll and you haven't got any of the other stuff then yes, you are 'bolloxed'

several times, i've walked into my bank (natwest/RBOS) shown some photo id, and walked out with a printout of my personal details, stamped by the bank, and a phone number they can ring at the branch to double check. for free as well

Makes you wonder how all those illegal immigrants ever manage to get anything done over here. Maybe it's all part of a cunning plan to keep them working for peanuts and outside the system!

its daft isnt it? i must have spoken to around 4 people yesterday and they all thought that it was weird.

what i did yesterday, a total of 234 miles!

Driving from leeds to nottingham, to find something with my address on that was over 3 years old, then driving from nottingham to leicester to go and give them to the dealer, gave him about 10 pieces of papaer with my name and address on, including a letter from the NHS. then drove back to nottingham, and then back to leeds at midnight, so it was quite a day yesterday!
