Jean van de Velde... rose to fame as the golfer who nearly won 'THE OPEN' only to hit the stand, byrne and everything else but the green on the final hole at Carnoustie...

Now he has another crusade... the womens game...!

With the Michelle Wie bandwagon going full force.. he has a point..
"Why don't we have the 100metres with men and women together? Or a woman fighting Mike Tyson?

"My whole point is where do we draw the line. If we accept that women can enter our tournaments then it applies that men can play with women.

"I am definitely going to approach them to get an application and if they let me play in the qualifying event then I will. I'll even wear a kilt and shave my legs.
He wants to qualify and play in the womens Open.....

Should he or shouldn't he...?

If I had the time and money, I'd attempt to take the 'women-only' insurers to court for sexual discrimination.

I totally support him on that, why shouldn't he be allowed to compete in a women's tournament?

I think he should be allowed to play. Equality should be just that, nothing more, nothing less

He's trying to prove a point - and a very good one indeed for which I say bravo to the guy.

However, if he does get let in, then the crux of his argument (i.e. women should not be allowed in the men's game) is broken, and as such, women will be allowed in the men's game!

'equality' has never been so unequal (C) *

* (C) Tony Hetherington 2005, I just made that up and thought it was quite good!

Maybe it's not so much a 'sex' thing as more a kind of handicap thing based on strength - for example it's daft to expect a woman to box Mike Tyson.

Or drive an F1 car

Such as Diamond? They'll quote men, just at a huge price.

While we're at it, why not take on the insurers for our increased premioums for being male?

Well there are weight classes for fighting tournaments like boxing, martial arts etc you can expect a flyweight to have any chance against a heavyweight boxer.

I think this is another case of an average player(driver) being afraid of being beaten by a woman

i say let women take part in any sport where it's not purely about strength, like golf. they'd lose anyway

If I understand it right, even the men don't use the men's tees. Both sexes use the 'competition' tees
