Mean Creek - Calling LA
Discussion
Saw this last night, got it out on DVD, alledgedly 5 * in the times and number 3 in the blockbuster charts....ummm, what a complete pile of rubbish.
Has anyone else seen this? what did you think?
It's dull, predicatable...slow, tedius, not a great deal actually happens, yet amazing reviews...have I missed some deep profound meaning in the film?

Pretty much sums up my own experience with it.
There's some ok-ish acting from a couple of kids but other than that....
Calling it "Stand By Me meets Delliverance" is a bit far-fetched. It's nowhere near as good as either of those films.
For a similar theme but done much better, IMHO, seek out River's Edge (80's film with Crispin Glover, I think it was his first film actually).

Dakkon, you, Neil and Andy neatly sum up the way the film divided the critics; some thought it shallow and derivative, others thought it had its moments.
It certainly wans'yt shallow, but you could see how it was an attempt to get back to the 'kid' movies like Stand by Me. I thought the cinematography was good, and the young actors, especially Kulkin, was excellent. It was one of those films that pootles along, and finishes in a 20 minute spell where everything you expected to happen does so. The ending was a little bit of an anticlimax. I thought there wopuld be a bit more in the way of tension, but it sprt of fizzled out. Certainly not the greatest movie, but a good wee drama.

I agree completely with you. We watched it the other week and thought what a complete load of rubbish. The Deliverance/Stand By Me comparison is crazy!! This film is nowhere near those two in any way!!
