I have recently come into the possesion of some old books dating back to the 1800's and i am not sure wether to sell or keep them for future family use,all the same i am curious as to their value, where can i find a site that would help me put a value on Books.

One of the books i have is "Ivanhoe"...Scott... F Warne&Co that has the words "Crown Library" inside the front cover, has this been Half inched from the Queen? :),there are a few books here given to people in the 1880's.

Keep them... But get a proper valuation on them, as they may be worth a decent amount.

I recall corresponding with someone on here about collectable books a couple of months ago - was it you?

Old books are rarely worth much UNLESS they are exceptionally rare and desirable - first editions are almost always the most sought after, and condition is paramount.

It is possible to buy old books by the yard to fill library shelves in up-market hotels etc.

I suggest a trip to an independent autioneers for a valuation.

Send me a pm/email with the details of the books. A good mate of mine buys & sell's hard to find and rare books for a hobby (makes enough to live off the proceeds to be honest) and I will be happy to forward the details to him for a proper valuation FOC.

Dont worry, should they be "proper rare" he will be under no impression he might get them cheap... you will get the best valuation he can provide with his knowledge.

I did mention the books 3-4 weeks back Alex so it might have been, i have found old comics to be worth more than old books, the only draw back with old books is they smell musky.
I recently paid a tidy sum for 8 volumes of Look&Learns and also found the 2 volumes of Ranger just before it amalgamated with L&L,so if theres any old comics in your loft they are worth holding on to.
