are we all destined to be victims of crime
Discussion
My mother and father's house was broken into whilst they were asleep.
All they gits wanted was his car keys.
the were real profesionals and only took the key fob off of the house key ring
and stole the car that he had cherished for years.
Are we all waiting to be a victim of crime, do we all think that it is going to happen
and are just waiting for the ineviatable.

Sorry to hear that.
If these bastards were properly punished (hands cut off), it wouldn't happen so often.
I can understand why so many people now have gigantic guard dogs.
After having lived in some dangerous third world countries for a few years, I have learned that the only answer is to fortify your castle,
and make life damned uncomfortable for anyone attempting to break in.
Of course here we mustn't harm these scumbags.

Yep, only a matter of time.
Since I moved to this house a neighbour has had has car stolen and torched, another has had his shed cleaned out, a nutter has just chased a couple of six year old girls down our street with his whotsit hanging out of his trousers (I'm not making that up) and Mrs C has had drugies needles thrown at her, and the new babies pram, from a multistorey car park in the town centre. Next door has had a breeze block chucked through his car windscreen.
The police response to this is to fine me for speeding on a near deserted road early on a weekend day. Why don't the authorities point some cameras at the scum that perpetrated the above? That would be hard wouldn't it... they'd have to actually do their jobs for a change wouldn't they.
P.S. by "authorities" I know perfectly well that the police are only doing what our government tell them to do. They are sandwiched between legal and politcal systems that don't give them much room.

We have had several break ins to cars, houses, garage, outbuildings! It just seems to be inevitable where my parents live right now. I even got broken into at uni and my friend's bag was stolen at a private function!!
If I ever catch a burglar in my own home though, I won't be responsible for my actions!

I’m sorry to hear about the car, as mentioned above the only way is to turn your house and vehicle into a fortress now. Often the police can do nothing at all except advise you to protect yourself better unfortunately, I’m sure there are many police men and women out there who would like to do more but are prevented.
Bugger mate, feel sorry for them!
It amazes me, though you shouldn't have to worry about it, why people leave their keys to something so expensive or important to them in such an obvious place as "key hooks" though...
When I go out without my car, ie, other half drives, my keys get hidden in the house. When I go to bed, the keys are next to me, along with my moderately sized Maglite.
It is sad when the deterrents to criminals are such that they just don't care and commit the crime anyway. I say, after two 100% positive acts, a severe warning is given that each further time they will have a finger removed to the knuckle, randomly chosen.
Persistent theives will soon no longer be able to theive, and they'll still have stumps usefull to do most things. A total innocent wrongly accused would at worst get a warning or a single finger chopped off.
I bet burglary and car crime would stop within a year
Still, best to not give them an easy target. Bed time I double check my car is locked and deadlocked from the bedroom window, and sleep with the keys, my wallet, phone etc.
I've always done that, maybe I'm just paranoid, but it's better being safe than sorry!

I'd move to Iraq or some place like that, you'll be safer. Oh and get the old owners mail forwarded onto to you when you get there.

so you don't have a family then?
I leave my keys downstairs but out of direct sight of the letterbox.
If someone is breaking in for the keys then I do not want them coming upstairs looking for them - it is only a car, I can get another just the same.
I cannot get another family.

Me too, would rather they took the cars, both of them, they are replacable.
We keep the keys are out of sight in a drawer, and don't have a letterbox, we have a box outside on the wall for mail.

You know, I always used to say to my son, for car thieves, cut a finger off, to which he said that was draconian, maybe, but why should society continue to put up with going on, and the car owner usually coming off worst.
After a couple of "convictions" they might think better of it. I think its Saudi where you can leave your keys in your car, safe in the knoweldge that it will still be there tomorrow, they may use draconian measurs out there, but it sure stops car crime.
We were burgled last Tuesday - the house alarm went off at 00:11 - I thought it was a false alarm, and went back to bed
It was only the next morning that I noticed my bag and keys had gone, and not until that night we discovered how they had got in.
Luckily for us, they didn't get too much because of the alarm, but the police said they would have wiped the house clean - with us in it
I phoned my Car Insurance Company, and within 30 minutes a low loader arrived to take the car to a 'secure pound' until it could go to a garage for a new ignition system etc. A hire car arrived an hour later.
I was very impressed at the service, although upset at the circumstances - but it could have been a lot worse...
So, I am now sitting in my office with locked doors and windows in 'one of the safest areas in the country, madam', (that's why we've been burgled twice then, is it?).
