The former resident of our house paid Mrs C a visit today.

We bought our house from him 3 years ago. Over this time we have hand delivered and forwarded his post for him. We have explained to many organisations that he no longer lives here and have informed them of his forwarding address.

Last week we were on holiday and some of his post piled up on the doormat.

He came round and started Fing away at Mrs C, saying she was too fat and lazy to forward his post for him. He had a real go at her, frightening the kids in the process. According to him she should get off her fat bum and run round with his post when stuff arrives for him. He does not like waiting for his post.

Mrs C pointed out that after 3 years perhaps he could have informed people that he has moved. Apparently he is too busy and "a stupid cow like you" should realise that.

Now I don't mind forwarding stuff promptly, especially if a former occupier genuinely thinks that an important letter has gone astray due to an address change. But he's really having a mickey take here. He's also been very unpleasant about it.

I was under the impression that, legally, post had to be forwarded.

Is there some time limit on this?
Can I forward it shredded?
Opened with the envelope filled with golden syrup?
Advice or suggestions anyone?

Put it back in the post with return to sender on it. Mark on it that the previous resident no longer lives at this address.

Surely the Royal Mail provide this service for a very reasonable 15 quid per quarter. I'd pop round and point this out to him - he can even request it online.....

Surely if it's that inconvenient the sum of 60 quid per year would be well worth it to him!

Its nothing to do with you at all. If he can't be bothered telling people or getting ot forwarded himself, then that's his problem. As far as I am aware you have no obligation to do anything with it at all.

The post I get for former residents of our little block of three flats (none of whom have lived here in the last three years) just goes straight in the bin now.

The guy sounds a right barsteward - has he not heard of the Royal Mail's redirection service. He's bloody lucky you've been good enough to forward his stuff on.

Anymore mail arrives, open it, seeing if there are ay personal details in it, sign him up for a few Internet porn sites, scams etc. and then burn it.

Tell him you're going to withhold any post until the end of each month, that'll make him sort it out. You should be careful because he could still be running up debts on your address, I'd take no chances and just put him in a position where he has to do it.

And introduce his face to a baseball bat for giving the lady a hard time... ungrateful shite.

I'd smack the fker personally, and then explain in detail how much it'll hurt him when you shove his mail up his arse!!

You've done him a big favour/service for the last 3 years (six months would be too much) and the thanks you get is that he insults your good lady and frightens your children.

If you're not physically willing to take matters into your own hands, then at very least, never forward him any mail again, read it all, then burn it all. If he comes round again report him for harrasment.

There's lots more nasty things I could think of, especially as you know where he lives and you get lots of his mail!! But another time maybe!

I can't believe how calmly you seem to be taking this, I'm boiling with rage just from reading it, and I'm generally a pretty placid guy.

That’s appalling! Here we have a service where you can request the post people not to deliver mail to former occupants of your address. I think they probably incinerate it (So at least it gets used for something useful), I wouldn’t even talk to him again after that little episode.

If you cant get the mail for him stopped (preferably without letting the post office know where he lives), at the very least have the decency to burn it and keep your house warm (Preferably while enjoying a glass of wine late a night with the wife).

Signing his new address up for junk mail could be a good idea of he persists. Whatever you do don’t forward his mail for him, even returning it to sender is to polite.

First things first I would also speak to local plod about his threatening behaviour... maybe the reason he hasnt changed his address is because hes wanted/in hiding from baliffs? I'm sure if he receives a visit warning him he will suddenly wake up. Afterall, you have all his (obviously much needed) post.

Tell him that he needs to sort out either getting the post re-directed or contact all establishments/people who send him post and notify them of his new address as from 1st Jan 06 you will no longer be providing the post forwarding service and begin "returning to sender" from that date onwards. After a period of 2 months you will no longer be "returning to sender" but rather destroying any further "junk" mail received at this time that is not address to the current resident (ie, you).
Send this to him at his new address in letter form and put in the letter that you will accept no further visitation from him. Failure to abide by your request that he stays away (and it is yours) will force your hand to involve the police further on the grounds of harrasment and you will start destroying any unwanted mail forthwith.

As previously posted, you have NO obligation to do anything and you certainly don't have to hand deliver or re-forward at your own expence?? WTF is that about? Your obviously to nice for your own good and have got into a dificult situation thats pretty hard to get out of.

Good luck, but go for notifying the police and sending the letter. Nice and official and gives you back up should the situation take a turn for the worse.

We still get official mail for previous owner from >7 years ago.

Return it all to sender.
You really don't want to be wilfully destroying HM Mail addressed to another party, no matter how much of a PITA it is.

I have to agree, as soon as the wife and kids were intimidated a line has been crossed. Buy a baseball bat, and introduce it to his limbs.

DO NOT DESTROY MAIL NOT FOR YOURSELF OR OPEN IT I BELEIVE IT IS A CRIMINAL OFFENCE.

Rather return all mail to sender. Print a load of stickers and just stik a return to sender on and once a week drop them all in a postbox.

The guy's taking the piss, frankly.

AFAIK, there's no requirement for a new resident to forward mail and you and your missus have done it for the last 3 years out of the goodness of your hearts. I would tell him to get stuffed.
