Probably one of the prettiest and fastest twin engined planes made of its time

exert said:

When the prototype was trialed on the 25th November 1940 it achieved 624 km/h in front of stunned officials. (Bowman, 1995) (go to Performance) This speed placed it 32 km/h faster than the contemporary MK.V. Spitfire. Fitted with new engines the prototype achieved 703 km/h, the fastest any Mosquito has flown

I used to watch the mozzy getting a weekly work out while I should have been doing what I was paid for

It was a fantastic sounding plane, and seeing it roll and dive made it all the better.

Lucky man,its something else having the torque from a 7 litre pull you along,to have one of those huge engines either side on full throttle must of been out of this world

Probably all the vibration.

Chim didnt notice the red LR but they had some good old motors in that film, love the motors with the running boards, now that would look good if you could incorperate running boards into todays car.

Hopefully we'll see a flying Mosquito back in the air within the next few years. With the demise of the BAe one back in 1996 there have been no airworthy example. I know that one is being vuilt in Australia and there may be a few more projects underway.

Trying to keep an all wooden and glie structure together after 60 years is very difficult.

I do hope so, then I'll start going to displays again - assuming that the Government hasn't made then illegal by then.

I enjoyed watching the Mosquito before it went down and the Vulcan was awesome.

Last time I went to a display I had the misfortune of seeing a Spitfire crash. It was about a dozen years ago and I haven't been to one since.

Was that the Rolls Royce Spitfire XIV at Barton?

I think that particular aircraft is flying again.

This month's Flypast magazine has a full list of all Spitfires, airworthy and on static display, in the UK.

It was a Griffin engined one (I'm pretty sure it was....) at Woodford.

The poor chap attempted a loop, but started from almost on the deck. He ran out of altitude on the way back and hit the runway. The thing just disappeared in a huge ball of fire.

It was a miserable end to many years of pleasurable visits to displays.

Through the seventies and early eighties I don't think I ever missed one of the Barton displays.

Incidentally, why did the Barton displays come to an end?

Thta was the RR Spit - I just got my airfields mixed up. There was a crash of some sort at Barton too so maybe that's why they came to an end.

Ahh, if it was a MkXIV then that explains why my fading memory thought it might be a Griffon engined Spit.

It was definitely a relatively late one.

There were a few bumps and scrapes at Barton over the years. It is a lovely old fashioned grass airfield that seems stuck in a timewarp.

The atmosphere at the displays was always great. I've loads of fond memories of sitting on the roof of the Landie looking over everyone's heads.

Happy days.

Cheers

Pat

there used to be a chap in my local old car club with a masserschmitt kr200 three wheeler, and on the dash he'd stuck a plate from the mosquito he used to fly when he was in the RAF.
it was brass from memory, and it listed the rate of climb, and max altitudes, and that sort of stuff.
