Picture this, a seaside town thats retail heart was struggling to compete with the monsters that are lakeside and bluewater.
Has had the stake well and truely hammered home this winter.

The main car park for all the shops has been closed for refurbishment for the next six weeks.

How Clever.. Im talking about Southend by the way.
Possibly the winning candidate for idiot at the council award for the century.

They'll still win - everyone will park illegally and they'll rake it in with fines

Yep, in my home town the town center shops were slowly being strangled so in order to help them out the local council changed the on street parking to pay and display!

Asking to see common sense from a council?,they will do an annual refit of their offices but think nothing of putting to inconvenience the local rate payers ,Southends no different to most other seaside towns ,going off track slightly something i noticed and i think its a reflection on all 'Seaside towns',a couple of year ago i had a break down the Devon/cornwall area and it was sad to see how some areas of these seaside towns had fallen into decay.

The sad thing is i wouldnt be in a hurry to go back but if there had been more investment and renovations in some of these towns then i would make a point of visiting them every so often.

Looking around you could see that they were hives before foriegn holidays became the way of life,it just needs the local councils need to use their heads and get their @rses in gear and try to preserve our seaside heritage and make them more appealing to the british holiday maker before they become ghost towns.

Devon must come near the top of the list - when I queried why they always seem to be doing serious roadworks during school holidays, they told me this was deliberate so as not to hold up the school buses - erm, what about all the tourists who visit the area in the school holidays? Oh they don't count, they just bring all their money into the area, support hundreds of tourist-related businesses, who cares if they're all stuck in traffic hold-ups every day! Something wrong somewhere!

Nope, all councils are like that. They seem to be created with espacially unthoughtful people, though occasionally a few of the people at pavement level in the organisation can turn in some sensible dealings.

Closing the main car parks in the 6 weeks leading up to Xmas - neat. I expect the newly increased business rates from the retailers give them the funds to start the work ...

Some similar situations locally - but the developments are going to take 2 years or so which means the ordure will hit the blades at some point anyway.

I have a suspicion that my local council has broken their own planning rules with our new speed humps though. I don't suppose they will care much but I will wait until they have finished all the work before pointing out the apparent error. Via the local paper I think.

Somebody on here (who will remain nameless) is a councillor.

He tells me he wouldn't trust some fellow councillors to open a bottle of milk....

Hmm. Milk can be tricky ...

... but I would be surprised if ours can open a door.

Presumably that's why the council employees always seem to hopeless - it makes the councillors look less bad.
