bleedin' fireworks
Discussion
I have spent the last 2 evenings from 5pm to 11pm with the tele on max volume to drown out the noise. One of the dogs ended up hiding under the sofa, shaking and panting. And we live in a semi-rural area with 2 ft thick walls. God knows what it must be like in urban areas.
I could tolerate it for Nov 5th and new years eve (just get the dog a sedative from the et next year) but it has been going on for weeks.
Time either to confine the sales to a few days before or produce fireworks with less 'Bang' and more 'oohh'

Could not agree more. My dog has been in a state of panic for the last week....WHY do we seem to celebrate this for over a week? It's Nov 5th....not a bleedin months worth.
Lady down the roads dog died of a heart attack during the fireworks last year so although it may be fun to some it certainly isn;t to everyone!
I love a fun night as much as anyone, including firework displays, but enough!!!

I have some sympathy with the view that fireworks are getting "overused", especially in the private house as opposed to display setting.
It happens round where I live at intervals throughout the "dark months". Strangly, our moggies seem to have become adjusted to the concept and just come into house when the noises start and sit looking disgruntled until they stop - then go out again.
The thing that annoys and mystifies me most though, is the TYPE of fireworks used in domestic settings. I actually quite enjoy a good firework display, and, when they really got going last night, went out into the garden to look at "the show". However for every one nice/impressive burst in the sky, there were about 30+ very loud bangs. The people in my area seem to have a competition on as to who can buy the most "howitzer" like mortars! Many are obviously NOT intended for domestic use (judging by the way the house shakes!) and appear to be "industrial strength". I really can't see the point. (I live in a very polite middle class area of 1920s and 30s houses by the way - not chav-ville)

I think if people could see with their own eyes the level of distress that fireworks cause they would start to feel more compassion. Saying it or showing it on the telly would not work. You have to live with the distress to understand what it does. I was surprised to see that my dog actually gave up to it by midnight last night. For some reason she no longer stressed over every bang. Perhaps she finally realised that the walls weren't going to fall in.
i have always used the argument that fireworks should not be sold to private indiviuals because the ones sold were pitiful and wre only of use to scallies who want to shoot them at your face. but now that people are remortgaging their homes for £750 displays from the back of their £200k terraced house that argument falls over. it was like downtown basra the last two nights. oh and guess what - waynetta slob 2 doors down managed to get her daughter frogmella burnt (burned?).
anyway. what's wrong with these people - if the 5th is on a wednesday - have a do on saturday - but the fircking 5th was on a saturday and we've had things all week...
i hate this country. [on the plus side the taggers didnt return!]

I was a trifle miffed last night at being kept awake by other people's celebrations, I just thought "Live and let live" and went to sleep with a pillow on my head.
No doubt my neighbours felt the same way at 5:55 this morning when I gave the car a few extra minutes of warm up time, a few exploratory blips of the throttle and some early morning ABBA to brighten their day

I'm the first to admit that I thoroughly enjoy a few fireworks. In fact we had a superb selection at a family party at my sisters house last night. Some really huge mortars and spectacular rockets. We were confident though that this wasn't distressing to the locals as there are only a few houses nearby and their owners were all with us at the party.
I happen to live in a strange little town in East Devon where fireworks are the norm, pretty much throughout the year and very often with little respect to the 23:00-07:00 law!
It just seems that any excuse is good enough for firework session.
November the 5th is fun (except for the firing of 'canons' at some ungodly hour in the morning) and I don't mind it at all. It gets a bit busy though with 10000 people filling the streets at nutters running amongst tem with flaming tar barrels held aloft!!!

Fireworks night is part of our national heritage, so I think we should be able to put up with some loud noises a couple of nights a week.
That's not the issue. It's the fact that it lasts for at least a week or two before and days after as well. I love fireworks as much as the next man...but 2 weeks plus every bloody night is both excessive and totally anti-social. It's that same old nutmeg...some people just do what they want with no consideration for others - selfish is the nice word that comes to mind.
Every year we have this thread.
It all comes down to consideration for others.
I have no problem with fireworks. I expect them each year for a couple of weeks around Nov 5th and New Year at the family parties - and my estate is largely family houses.
The sky lights up around 7:30pm until about 9:00pm. Its fine.
Sure if you have animals you need to keep them in - but this is for just a few weeks a year.
To the naysayers: "Lighten Up!"
To the pyromaniacs: "By all means let 'em off. But finish up before 9:00pm so we can all sleep ready for the next night."

Personally I think Fri/Sat nights on the weekends closest to Nov 5th are OK - it's the midweek and Sunday night shindigs that I take issue with.
As a hardened pyromaniac I have a penchant for 6" mortars, RPG style rockets and 40 - 50kg of multiple firing barrages. Took part in a cracking display last night with a nice selection of the above.
However, was stunned to see the skyline of the next village looking (and sounding) somewhat like Baghdad when the Yanks started delivering peace and democracy from B52s.

I trust none of you miserable lot are going to LeMans next year ![]()
To use an analogy, if you went to the seaside you'd be less annoyed to get sand or water on you then if you were sat in your living room and someone burst in and doused you with seawater and threw sand at you.
I've got nothing against domestic fireworks, it's just the lack of consideration that gets me. How can one justify letting off fireworks at 3am a week before/after bonfire night? We have a few neighbours round our way who need little or no excuse to set them off. And we have them going off several weeks before and after any given date, whether that be 4th July, 5th Novemeber, New Years, or indeed some random date corresponding to a birthday, a party, or simply because they haven't set any of the damn things off for a while.
I think it just comes down to consideration and moderation in the end, like so many things in life.
