I was walking to a pub on Saturday night with a friend of mine when a group of lads started chatting to us, quite friendly really. Anyway they'd been chucked out of somewhere, didn't really get all the details. The next thing I know one of them just punches my mate in the head and runs.

Now I was quite surprised with this, and proceeded to ask his mate what that was all about, his response was to take a swing at my eye and run off himself.

I was foolish because I shouted that he should learn how to punch, so he turned around and ran back swinging it again. By this time the bouncers had come over and they all left.

Now the punches didn't hurt, but he got me in the eye with the first one which has left a mark, and so today I look like a thug in front of my Japanese client.

I know we live in a pretty poor state of affairs, but some people need a right good drowning.

As opposed to a fairly inadequate drowning?

Fairly inadequate would be a start, but it wouldn't quite get the results I'm looking for.

weird, I had a random guy off the street try and hit me on the back of the head the other week, luckily I caught him out the corner of my eye and instinctively blocked his attack, he looked suprised and made off rather sharpish. I was left standing there in state of mild shock thinking WTF just happened? People these days, can't trust any of them, now I walk round in a paranoid state expecting everyone to hit me

Seen this happen so many times (lots of places, london, manchester, liverpool, newcastle), it seems to have a 'lads night out' these days number one priority is to pull - if this fails then next priority is to have a fight (so so stupid) a lot of blokes these days will make it their goal to have a fight before they go home and I've seen often, lads being friendly to other blokes so the others let their guard down or just waiting near them to 'pounce'

Hate this country some times.

I'm going to deal with it by starting to hit random strangers. I figure my pre-emptive strike will be a good warning to any stupid moron who wants to hit me. I call this Bush-syndrome.

It's not just here - I had to leg it from Lake Geneva of all places once. It's more a stupid male thing than a British thing.

Spot on,i remember the first time i came across this at around 8 years old,i was on my own fishing when i spotted a group of lads coming down the road towards me,one of them the smallest of the bunch started talking to me all freindly and asked if he could hold my fishing rod, feeling a bit intimidated and then relaxed with his freindly nature i said yes.

Next minute he just threw the Rod in the river and they all went of laughing, i stood there totally baffled and gave him/them a look of bewilderment but promptly waded in and recovered it,at 8 years old it takes time to put any reason to madness.

A friend of mine was confronted by a group of lads the other week (he was leathered) and after a bit of ribbing one of them asked if he minded being slapped while another filmed it. He said 'As long as you dont' mind me beating the shit out of you afterwards - go for your life' and they walked away.

Arses.

Yeah, but I'm willing to bet it's more of a problem with the British than anyone else.

My worry on this kind of behaviour is that it's spreading throughout Europe (especially to Eastern Europe) through British tourism. The British tourists go for over-indulgent bouts of cheap booze, sex and violence, and as the Eastern European economies need the money, they welcome them with open arms in order to make money while the British trash the place and tarnish the image of the city.

The usual flaw in capitalism - turn a blind eye to degeneration and ruin because it makes money. However, British tourists are well on their way to ruining Amsterdam, Prague, Budapest, Krakow and Warsaw, and you can bet Riga and Bulgaria are next on the list. Now it seems that this so-called 'culture' that the British male stands for is well on its way to taking over Europe. After all, it's already had a fair chunk of Spain and Greece.

I don't want to see it anywhere.

Not that you're one to generalise eh? So we British males stand for trashing places and tarnishing cities' images? And "British tourists go for over-indulgent bouts of cheap booze, sex and violence"? I'm sure there is a minority that enjoys all this (I must admit, an over-indulgent bout of sex sounds appealing to me), but please do not include every British male in your moment on the soap box. Incidentally have you been to eastern Europe? Yes these people need the money. No, we are not any worse than the local men.

I was talking about it from the perspective of the locals.

In places like Prague, there are tour operators that virtually cater for this minority, centering on getting their clients trashed, shoehorning them into brothels and not giving a shite if they start a fight with someone/each other/themselves because they walk away with a drunkenly-signed cheque at the end of the day.

The local people hate them. They don't want the image of their historic city tarnished by a bunch of yobs, it's not what they stand for.

But the tour operators are encouraging this behaviour as it's good for their business. The local authorities recognise that it's a sorry state of affairs but also recognise that the city needs the money.

My only worry is that, as more of Eastern Europe opens up to tourists and embraces capitalism somewhat excessively, how many more will chase the British yob-market for profit's sake?

Surely no responsible company would want to encourage this behaviour?

They don't want their historic cities image tarnished? Why put brothels and strip clubs everywhere then? They came first to attract the tourists NOT the other way round.

Tis a good place Prague. You're right that anything you can do there you can do in London. But maybe the only thing I found in Prague was that the beer is very cheap, very strong and because the service is so good compared to the UK you're glass is never empty I get the impression that alot of Brits aren't quite used to that.

But it did seem to be confined to a quite well defined and small area, outside of which it's more or less tourist free.

Anyway I thought the Mayor of Prague was quoted as saying "better druken English than sober Germans"

As far a I could tell the people of Prague don't like the Germans or the Russians but are very Anglophile.

Enough places in Europe to know that the English have a very bad name for themselves, to the point where my first instinct on the continent is to speak German.

Seen on TV? Well there have been a fair few high profile investigations into the behaviour of British tourists by the likes of Macintyre and Macdonald. I'm surprised it hasn't escaped your attention.

Yes, I'm sure it's well-contained in some places, but it's getting out of hand in others, and the more the tourist trade sweeps into countries with weaker economies, the more difficult it is to contain the profiteers.

Oh yes, because across Europe young German men are viewed as being so much nicer..........

....to explain my sarcasm, IMO across Europe if there is one collection of people more reviled that groups if British young men, it's groups of German young men. So your choice of disguise amuses me somewhat.
