In order to receive HDTV signal you need to have an HDTV decoder, without it you get zilch.
The fact that your plasma is HDTV ready does not mean you receive the signal automatically. What it means is , the plasma is "connectable" to an HDTV decoder, and capable of dispalying a High Definition picture far superior to that of freeview or DVD .As it stands the PAL system we use is displayed at 625 lines.HDTV will dense up the display to around 1080 lines which will enable you to see the tiniest detail in any displayed film .
Sky is going ahead with HDTV next year which means it would have to supply new decoders to any takers. Those who don't have HDTV ready displays can watch HDTV on a "scaled down" basis from the HDTV decoder output ie : normal scart connection, and in order to watch pure HDTV picture on your plasma you would need a "digital" cable too.
As far as DVD standard for HDTV , nothing has been decided yet on which standard they are going to agree on.
It is a stand off between BLU-RAY (sony) or HD-DVD (Toshiba) which reminds me of VHS v BETAMAX.
Again it would mean new dvd machines , new higher quality BLU-RAY (or) HD-DVD dvds(movies) in order to take advantage of the quality.Whether they will be backward compatible with "standard" dvds god knows!
Technology for you hey!

Not forgetting the cables...
After PC World et al seem to be becoming slightly less ravenously piratical about gouging the uninformed, and we could all start to relax a little, along comes HDTV, and pure digital interfaces. And cables:

I don't know for sure, but I think there's no way on earth that they'd broadcast the football on HD only if there's no going to be some kind of adapters or something. If you look at the US situation, the US government has actually set aside billions of dollars to smooth over the transition, including the purchase of adapters for non-HD TVs (can't remember where I read that). I also read some market predictions before I bought my non-HD plasma; its estimated that HD TVs will achieve the same level of market penetration of ordinary plasmas by 2010. They just would not cut off a massive advertising audience until then.
IMHO, of course.
IMHO, of course.

Blu-Ray is tecnically superior. HD-DVD is probably cheaper.
Both should be backward compatable.
If I read the technical reports correctly, the BBC will be broadcasting a chunk of programming in HDTV, but due to multiplex bandwidth issues on the Digital Terrestrial Freeview stuff, they will be renting space on the Sky satellite to broadcast to anyone with a Sky HD box.
Freeview will not really have enough bandwidth to broadcast HDTV till the analogue switch off in 2012.
The other option of course, is the IPTV option, of TV to a device over broadband ethernet...

like Homechoice..?
i think that kind of system is the way forward personally (not knowing the technicalities involved) it's a shame they don't serve tht much of the country.
